Corporate Director

Director, Corporate Banking Portfolio Management

The Director will leverage their relationship management expertise, technical and risk analysis skills, business development acumen, and professionalism to expand and maintain a portfolio of Corporate relationships within the risk appetite frameworks. This role involves collaborating with Directors and Senior Directors across the team to streamline deal origination and execution, while ensuring a customer experience that outperforms competitors, driving sustainable growth.

The position is within Nationwide’s Strategic Finance Team, part of its Business Banking function, responsible for shaping and maintaining our brand in the North & East of Scotland Corporate Banking region.


About the Role and Location

As this role covers the North & East Scotland region, the successful candidate will need to be locally based in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, or Inverness due to frequent travel for in-person client meetings. There will also be regular, in-office team collaboration events – monthly in Edinburgh or Aberdeen (though location may vary).

Note: Virgin Money is now fully part of Nationwide.You’ll be employed by Nationwide right from the start, gaining meaningful impact with immediate effect – while helping to integrate a legacy-driven bank into our virtual organisation.


Your Responsibilities

Driving Strategic Account Development

  • Bring high levels of self-awareness and brand alignment through demonstrating our Purpose and core values.
  • Network with external peers to solidify Virgin Money’s reputation as a leading bank, offering innovative and tailored funding solutions.
  • Mitigate risk exposure by evaluating and identifying signs of financial stress, ensuring compliance and safeguarding against bad debts.

Financial & Compliance Excellence

  • Analyse, interpret and synthesise complex business, financial and cash flow data, calculating critical ratios with precision.
  • Recommend lending proposals for effective credit decisioning, ensuring thorough documentation is in order.
  • Conduct secure and unsecured lending strategies and implement compliance frameworks as per FCA regulations.

Operational & Cultural Leadership

  • Implement administration efficiencies and optimize service quality to foster customer satisfaction.
  • Guide and support new customer onboarding collaboratively with Senior Directors.
  • Drive continual improvement and teamwork to deliver outstanding results – enhancing our mutual banking model.

About You

Required Experience & Qualifications

Seeking a professional with:

  • A proven track record in customer service excellence.
  • Strong technical, credit and deal management expertise— evidence of delivering a varied portfolio across the spectrum from secured to unsecured lending for new and existing customers.
  • Financial literacy: ability to interpret statements, forecasts, and cash flows; calculate key ratios and financial models across Excel with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, capable of quickly building credibility and delivering tough messages with tact.
  • Analytical problem-solving capabilities— swiftly identifying gaps and implementing swift solutions.
  • Proven ability to operate autonomously to tight deadlines.
  • Flexibility and resilience to manage complex, evolving business challenges.
  • Profound understanding of FCA policies and banking regulations, with a dedication to compliance.
  • Regional market awareness and a thriving local professional network.
