I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The role combines strategic leadership with hands-on delivery. You will develop and lead a practical social impact and employability strategy, while taking ownership of initiatives currently delivered across multiple functions. Working closely with planning, development and communications colleagues, you will help shape and deliver against complex funding arrangements, engage with local authorities and key stakeholders, and act as a visible ambassador for the campus. From attending council meetings to developing programmes and partnerships, this is a role that requires both credibility at senior level and the ability to make things happen on the ground.
The successful candidate will bring experience of delivering community impact and socio-economic initiatives in complex, multi-stakeholder environments, alongside the confidence to operate at both strategic and operational levels. You will be a strong relationship builder, comfortable navigating ambiguity and influence, and motivated by the opportunity to create meaningful community impact. Backgrounds may vary, from development, local authority, consultancy or the social impact sector. You will however share a practical, delivery-focused mindset and the ability to bring clarity, energy and momentum to a broad and evolving brief.
