Cost Accountant – Engineering Business
About the Role
A growing engineering business is seeking to appoint a Cost Accountant to join its finance team. With multiple sites and a strong focus on operational excellence, the organisation offers the chance to work in a commercially focused environment, where accurate costing, financial insight and continuous improvement drive business success.
Your Responsibilities
As Cost Accountant, reporting to the Finance Manager, your key duties will include:
- Collecting and analysing product cost data across multiple engineering sites
- Supporting the development and maintenance of standard costing methodologies
- Preparing detailed variance, margin, and cost analysis reports
- Reviewing material, labour, and production variances and implementing corrective actions
- Assisting with annual standard cost updates, inventory valuation reviews, and margin analysis
- Collaborating closely with production, engineering, supply chain, and commercial teams to ensure costing accuracy
- Becoming a key user of the SAP costing system while driving process improvements across the group
- Contributing to budgeting, forecasting, and cost-saving initiatives
- Presenting meaningful financial insights and recommendations to management teams

Requirements
To succeed in this role, you will need:
Essential:
- A minimum of 3 years’ cost accounting experience within a manufacturing environment
- Strong knowledge of costing systems and practical experience
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills
- A robust understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting
- Advanced Excel proficiency, including expertise across Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to prepare and interpret daily, weekly, monthly, and annual financial reports
- Experience working with production, engineering, or operations teams on costing and performance analysis
- Strong communication skills and ability to influence stakeholders at all levels

Desirable:
- A degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline
- Previous experience using SAP or a similar Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system
- Experience in developing and analysing cost standards within a manufacturing setting
