Cost Accountant

Cost Accountant – Engineering Business

About the Role

A growing engineering business is seeking to appoint a Cost Accountant to join its finance team. With multiple sites and a strong focus on operational excellence, the organisation offers the chance to work in a commercially focused environment, where accurate costing, financial insight and continuous improvement drive business success.

Your Responsibilities

As Cost Accountant, reporting to the Finance Manager, your key duties will include:

  • Collecting and analysing product cost data across multiple engineering sites
  • Supporting the development and maintenance of standard costing methodologies
  • Preparing detailed variance, margin, and cost analysis reports
  • Reviewing material, labour, and production variances and implementing corrective actions
  • Assisting with annual standard cost updates, inventory valuation reviews, and margin analysis
  • Collaborating closely with production, engineering, supply chain, and commercial teams to ensure costing accuracy
  • Becoming a key user of the SAP costing system while driving process improvements across the group
  • Contributing to budgeting, forecasting, and cost-saving initiatives
  • Presenting meaningful financial insights and recommendations to management teams

Requirements

To succeed in this role, you will need:

Essential:

  • A minimum of 3 years’ cost accounting experience within a manufacturing environment
  • Strong knowledge of costing systems and practical experience
  • Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills
  • A robust understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting
  • Advanced Excel proficiency, including expertise across Microsoft Office applications
  • Ability to prepare and interpret daily, weekly, monthly, and annual financial reports
  • Experience working with production, engineering, or operations teams on costing and performance analysis
  • Strong communication skills and ability to influence stakeholders at all levels

Desirable:

  • A degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related discipline
  • Previous experience using SAP or a similar Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system
  • Experience in developing and analysing cost standards within a manufacturing setting
