Job Introduction

Exciting opportunities are available for reliable and safety-focused individuals to join National Grid Electricity Distribution as Craftsperson (Fitters). We are currently recruiting for Fitters within the South West Maintenance team based in Bodmin or Pool, and within the Capital Delivery team based in Plymouth. These roles offer the opportunity to work on essential electricity network infrastructure, helping to maintain a safe, reliable, and resilient network for our customers and communities.

Reporting to the Team Leader / Operations Manager you will be working as part of a team to install, maintain and repair power system components at substations including switchgear, transformers, protection systems and associated equipment operating at voltages up to 132kV.

We’re looking for a strong team player who can follow instructions accurately, work safely at all times and confidently support site operations.

The role involves practical, hands-on work including substation inspections, working at height, manual handling, and working with tools and oil. You may occasionally work alone and may also be required to supervise contractors on site, ensuring all activities are completed safely and to required standards.

Flexibility is essential, as the role may involve overtime and weekend working and travel to other sites within the South West licence area to meet operational requirements.

You must hold GCSE English and Maths (A*–C / 4–9) or Functional Skills Level 2, and depending on experience, you may start on a lower salary until training is complete.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
