Creative Facilitator/Project Coordinator

Hours 28 hours (over 4 day)

Salary £26,989 (Actual)

Responsible to: Creative Manager

Responsible for Delivery of high-quality mental-health focussed creative writing & arts programme to facilitate the projection of youth-voice on the opinions, fears, views, concerns and passions of young people - particularly those who are marginalised and vulnerable and/or at risk of social exclusion and exploitation.

About the Project

Three Minute Heroes is a music and mental health programme, developed and facilitated by The Warren Youth Project in Hull, that uses creative writing to support young people, and turns their words into music, by using local musicians and singer/songwriters. We then developed this programme into Three Minute Monologues, using the same model of creative writing sessions with young people, but this time commissioning professional playwrights to turn young people’s words, themes and thoughts into monologues.

We are pushing this project even further and are looking for a candidate who can facilitate creative writing sessions to support young people’s mental health and wellbeing, whilst connecting with local musicians, script writers and artists to produce creative outputs that are entrenched in youth voice.

Three Minute Heroes sessions will allow young people to have access to high quality creative writing sessions as a means to better their mental health and offload their thoughts and experiences. We will then take those writings, anonymise them and give them to local young musicians, spoken word artists, playwrights, artists and illustrators to make an array of creative output inspired by the young people who use writing as a way to make sense of what they are going through.

The person for this role will have a background in creative writing (and we are open to ‘not so expected’ experience in writing too, this does not necessarily mean a writing qualification) and will be able to facilitate engaging sessions that support young people, some of whom have never written before, to get their thoughts onto paper.

Job Purpose

To work as part of our Forged creative team to deliver the next phase of Three Minute Heroes programme– the primary purpose of which is to give young people a voice through creative writing and then have that writing anonymised and passed onto artists, illustrators, spoken word and playwrights and musicians to create something both inspired by and using young people’s words.

To liaise and build constructive partnerships with local organisations, community groups and local creative organisations and individuals to ensure the success of the project.

To prepare and implement relevant workshops in creative writing.

Facilitate the provision of high quality, enjoyable creative expression experiences centred on the needs of young people, particularly those who rarely engage with the arts.

To ensure that delivery of the programme meets the needs of the young people they serve, whilst also complying with the contractual requirements of the respective funding agencies.

To be responsible for ensuring that all monitoring, evaluation and quality assurance requirements are completed to the highest standard and by agreed deadlines.

To be committed to The Warren’s ethos of Empowerment when working with young people, colleagues, partners and outside agencies.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Work as the lead with the support of the Forged creative team to develop and deliver the Programme.
  • To recruit young people onto the programme – with a particular focus on marginalised, excluded and vulnerable young people.
  • To identify and develop positive relationships with local organisations to establish opportunities for young people.
  • To engage local creatives (artists, illustrators, musicians, spoken word performers and script writers) to produce the creative outputs of the project, inspired by the writings of young people.
  • To encourage young creatives (artists, illustrators, musicians, spoken word performers and script writers) to produce the creative outputs of the project inspired by the writings of young people.
  • To engage young people within a targeted group and gain their respect by understanding their circumstances and barriers to participation and assisting them to overcome these, using a non-judgemental approach.
  • Support the participation and creative progression of young people on the programme.
  • Contribute to the monitoring processes of the project, which include maintaining records, statistical recording, development planning and evaluation procedures as required.
  • Ensure that accurate records/paperwork including schemes of work, session plans, course attendance, recording of individual learners’ progress and achievement are maintained.
  • To carry out administrative duties as necessary and ensure monitoring systems are consistently maintained e.g. data collection, records of attendance etc. for monitoring and evaluation purposes.
  • To network with partnership organisations working with young people to maintain good relationships and develop collaborative working practices.
  • To encourage participants/student’s longer-term participation in activities through identifying and developing progression routes and linking with partner agencies.
  • Active participation in and commitment to continuous professional development and the supervision/appraisal process.
  • To undertake such other duties, training and/or hours of work as may be reasonably required and which are consistent with the general level of responsibility of this job.
  • To be aware and comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act.
  • To carry out his/her/their responsibilities with due regard to the Equality Act 2010.
  • To cover as and when required in other areas of The Warren.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the grade and falling within the scope of the post.
