Crime Head of Department Duty Solicitor
# Crime Head of Department / Duty Solicitor - Greater Manchester
Position: Up to £75,000 + Benefits + Free parking
An exciting opportunity has emerged for an experienced Criminal Legal Aid Supervising Solicitor to spearhead the launch and development of a new Criminal Law department at a fast-growing, ambitious law firm based in Stockport.
This is a high-impact strategic hire, allowing you to take a leading role in shaping the department ahead of securing a crime contract and establishing duty rota coverage. The role offers senior autonomy, enabling you to execute a clear growth strategy while supporting the firm’s expansion towards a full-service offering, including opening further offices across the UK.
Key Responsibilities
- Legal Aid Supervision: Ensure compliance with LAA (Legal Aid Agency) requirements
- Supervision & Mentoring: Lead, train, and guide junior fee earners, upholding high standards of quality and compliance
- Departmental Development: Assist in establishing sustainable processes and infrastructure for the crime department
- Case Management: Handle a caseload of criminal matters (both private pay and legally aided)
- Duty Rota Readiness: Prepare the firm for Manchester/Stockport police station and Magistrates’ court coverage
- Strategic Growth: Contribute to the long-term vision and expansion of the department
- Client Representation: Provide legal advice and representation at police stations and Magistrates’ courts

Candidate Requirements
- Qualified Solicitor with 5+ years of Criminal Law experience
- LAA Supervisor status (essential)
- Extensive experience in legal aid crime work and compliance
- Demonstrated supervisory or leadership experience
- Higher Rights of Audience (preferred, not mandatory)
- Ability to operate effectively as a senior leader within a dynamic, growing team
