Critical Environment Technician (CET) at Microsoft – Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I)
About the Role
As a Critical Environment Technician (CET) in Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovations (CO+I) team, you will play a vital role in maintaining the critical infrastructure that keeps Microsoft’s global datacenters operational.
Key responsibilities include:
- Coordinating with suppliers and vendors
- Ensuring safe working environments
- Hands-on maintenance of critical environment equipment
- Responding to onsite incidents
- Monitoring equipment performance via telemetry platforms
CO+I is the backbone of Microsoft’s cloud services, supporting mission-critical platforms such as: Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Microsoft Azure.
The group operates over 200 datacenters in 32 countries, serving billions of users worldwide. Microsoft prioritises sustainability and efficiency, continuously advancing its datacenters to meet evolving demands.

Responsibilities
- Serve as an operations specialist in a key area of critical environment (CE) operations (e.g., electrical, mechanical, controls, generators), performing advanced tasks independently.
- Inspect and supervise CE-related equipment—such as HVAC, mechanical systems, and cooling infrastructure—for unsafe or abnormal conditions, escalating issues per Microsoft standards.
- Utilise internal Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to track assets and moisture work orders while planning maintenance schedules.
- Leaders trained incident response teams for abnormal conditions, coordinating with other CE professionals to perform corrective actions swiftly and safely.
- Develop and refine emergency (EOP), methods of procedure (MOP), and standard operating procedures (SOP) to improve incident response protocols.
- Conduct planned, predictive, and corrective maintenance, ensuring compliance with SOPs for equipment (e.g., electrical, mechanical, cooling systems).
- Troubleshoot systems depending within expertise, offering technical guidance to colleagues.
- Ensure adherence to safety protocols (e.g., Job Hazard Assessments, environmental compliance) to uphold high operational standards.

Requirements
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
- Experience in mission-critical services or applied learning (e.g., data centres, hospitals, manufacturing, or similar high-availability environments).
- Valid driver’s licence (required for shift and travel duties). (Shift work includes evenings, nights, weekends, and occasional holidays.)

Security Background Check Requirements: Must pass a Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications
(Not mandatory but advantageous)
- An Associate’s degree or technical trade certification (e.g., military, trade school) + 3 years in mission-critical services.
- Or equivalent relevant experience + demonstrated proficiency in CE systems.
Salary (United Kingdom):
- £34,400 - £43,300 per year for ATR-B.
- £36,300 - £50,100 per year for ATR-C. Benefits and compensation may vary based on eligibility.
