Cryptographic HSM and Key Management Engineer
Purpose of the Role
To develop, implement and maintain solutions that support the safeguarding of the bank’s systems and sensitive information.
Accountabilities
- Provision of subject matter expertise on security systems and engineering patterns
- Development and implementation of protocols, algorithms, and software applications to protect sensitive data and systems
- Management and protection of secrets, ensuring secure generation, storage, and usage
- Execution of audits to monitor, identify and assess vulnerabilities in the bank’s infrastructure/software
- Support for the response to potential security breaches
- Identification of advancements to support the innovation and adoption of new cryptographic technologies and techniques
- Collaboration across the bank, including developers and security teams, to align cryptographic solutions with business objectives, security policies and regulatory requirements
- Development, implementation and maintenance of Identity and Access Management (IAM) solutions and systems

Position: Cryptographic HSM and Key Management Engineer
About the Role
Join Barclays as a Cryptographic HSM and Key Management Engineer within the Chief Information Security Office (CISO), ensuring the safeguarding of encryption keys and cryptographic services essential for secure, multi-tenancy encryption across more than 300 enterprise platforms.
- This hands-on role requires an experienced engineer with deep knowledge of:
- Symmetric and asymmetric cryptography
- Cryptographic algorithms
- Policy-driven security controls
- Will engage with Hardware Security Modules (HSM) using Thales and Entrust
- Operate, support, and maintain production-grade cryptographic applications and key management solutions
- Requires familiarity with complex infrastructure, including Windows and Linux servers
- Work schedule: Anchor days on Monday and Tuesday, with standard UK hours (9 AM–5 PM), alongside a 24/7 on-call rotation for critical incident support
- Determined responsibility for onsite implementation of equipment within data centres

Key Responsibilities
- Mastery of Cryptography and Information Security, covering:
- Key Management
- HSM Configuration, Installation, Support
- Certificate Management
- Diagnose and resolve certificate-related issues across:
- Applications, networks, and operating systems (configuration, connectivity, hardware failures)
- Possess ITIL certification
- Strong stakeholder management skills with ability to:
- Influence and negotiate at all levels
- Valid driving licence is mandatory (with no driving convictions); further assessment will be conducted as part of hiring process
- Demonstrate excellence in attention to detail while ensuring accuracy
- Manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines with sound decision-making
Highly Valued Skills
- Relevant security or project management certifications
- Background in:
- Operational environments
- IT Infrastructure
- Incident response
- Change management
- Strong documentation skills for operational procedures
- Familiarity with:
- SharePoint
- Confluence
- Jira
- Ability to interface with:
- Unix/Windows operating systems
Location
The successful candidate will be based at Radbroke Hall, Knutsford.
