About The Role
The Curriculum Leader for English (CLE) will contribute to the delivery of excellent student outcomes, quality assurance and enhancement, and curriculum innovation, which embeds strong collaborative working in the International Study Centre at Aberdeen University and with both the Study Group Network and Aberdeen University.
The Curriculum Leader for English will lead on key elements of the organisation of the AES team to support the delivery of excellent student outcomes. They will work with the Regional Head of English Curriculum to assure quality of provision and enhance the curriculum through the development of innovative practice.
Reporting to the Regional Head of English Curriculum (RHEC), you will work closely with senior colleagues within and outside of the Centre and be accountable for the delivery of contractually required progression rates to the University. In addition to supporting the effective line management of teaching staff from an academic perspective, you will also have accountability for student outcomes in AES.
The successful candidate will have a teaching commitment of an average of 10 hours per week.
Strategic Leadership
- Contribute to planning and development including human resources; academic development; learning, teaching, and assessment; and academic quality assurance and enhancement, as part of the Centre Management Team (CMT).
- Attend and actively contribute to relevant University partnership Boards and Committees, work with university colleagues through approved liaison points and report regularly on these through the deliberative and management structures.
- Identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats and identify appropriate actions to solve problems and enhance delivery with the other academic staff.
Academic Leadership and Management
- Provide effective and efficient academic management and coordination of staff resources across the academic and progression support teams in the ISC, working closely with the other Subject Leads and tutors.
- Ensure the recruitment of academic staff is planned, timely, and compliant.
- Ensure that the AES team meet key minimum expectations/compliance in their duties and provide feedback on their performance.
- Participate in regular meetings with teaching and support staff and represent the Centre at appropriate events and meetings within the ISC, the partner university, and externally.
Quality Assurance and Enhancement
- Taking responsibility for academic standards, the quality of learning opportunities, the accuracy and completeness of published information, ensuring that they are managed appropriately and in accordance with the policies and procedures of the ISC.
- Take responsibility for ensuring that the Centre is fully compliant with Study Group’s, relevant external agencies’ quality frameworks, policies, procedures, and codes of practice.
- Oversee and respond to External Examiner(s) with regards to student outcomes and the effective assessment processes within the Centre; as well as assist Centre management staff in providing timely reports and responses to the Study Group Central Quality team.
- Contribute to and monitor progress against the actions in the Centre Action Plan and report on these to the Centre Director and various governance committees, as required from time to time.
- Contribute to ensuring that the Quality Assurance framework is implemented across all academic teams and lead on the development of the relevant sections of the Annual Monitoring Report.

Operational Leadership and Management
- As part of the Centre management team, contribute towards effective day-to-day management of the ISC including inducting staff, implementing health and safety policies, arranging cover for absent staff, organising events such as student induction, open days/celebration evenings, and responding to the views, needs, and requests of students, University of Aberdeen, staff, parents, and sponsors; attending meetings as appropriate, and inform strategic planning and resource allocation.
- Collaborate to ensure timetables and assessments are scheduled efficiently, effectively, and to deadlines, working with Student Experience Senior Coordinators and the Director of Campus Operations.
- Work closely with Subject Leaders (where applicable) and the Director of Campus Operations to ensure that appropriate, current, and relevant subject, academic skills, and language developments are integrated and embedded in programmes, aligned with and affirming partnership articulation aspirations.
- Work with the centre e-champion to ensure the effective development of the Centre’s VLE, pre-arrival materials, and any online learning opportunities, where applicable.
- Monitor progression tracking activities and student outcomes planning within the Centre, reporting to the Director of Campus Operations and Centre committees, as appropriate.
- Monitor agreed Key Performance Indicators in English to demonstrate effectiveness in achieving the Centre’s objectives and manage performance, where required.
- Contribute effectively to the Centre’s Safeguarding responsibilities, and Safer Recruitment actions, and make certain that all English teaching staff across the Centre are aware of their obligations/requirements.
- Manage and address day-to-day issues that arise, ensuring that solutions are sought and problems resolved effectively and efficiently.
Student Monitoring
- Share accountability for ensuring that the Centre is compliant with UKVI regulations in terms of student attendance reporting.
- Ensure attendance checks are in place in your area, and are regularly reviewed, such as weekly registers and via staff, to ensure students are attending, completing work set, preparing and attending all tests, mid-term assessments, and module exams, recording all issues and taking action with problems, maintaining student records and results to include reports for academic committees.
- Contribute to analysing data and feedback from a wide variety of sources to monitor progress towards progression targets, planning and implementing remedial actions where necessary.

About You
- Bachelor’s degree and Post-graduate qualification in a relevant subject (essential)
- Post-doctoral qualification in a relevant subject (desired)
- Leadership and management training
- Leadership and management experience in a teaching and learning environment
- Experience of leading a team to achieve high levels of student academic performance and outcomes against agreed targets
- Experience of delivering English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or TESOL subject to international students in UK Higher or Further Education
- Experience of planning and running complex education courses in EAP or TESOL
- Experience of leading the provision of academic skills within HE environments
- Experience of partnership working in the education sector
