About Appleby Westward
Appleby Westward is the SPAR Wholesaler and Retailer covering the West of England. Our Retail Distribution Centre and Support Offices are based in Saltash, Cornwall, where we employ around 2,000 colleagues who support our wholesale distribution operations for both our independent retail estate and company-owned retail stores, as well as work within our SPAR network.
Our SPAR retail stores are the leading convenience brand, operating in communities from Chichester in the east, to Land’s End in the west, and from Bristol and Salisbury in the north. In addition to offering convenience goods, groceries, chilled foods, and food-to-go, we also provide essential local services at selected locations, including Post Office services, lottery, and online collection and delivery services.
We take pride in serving our communities and strive to provide an efficient, quality customer service for all our customers. We also play a significant role in local charity and community support, including fundraising for local organisations and our main charity partner, Marie Curie.

The Customer Service Assistant Role

What You’ll Do
- Warm Welcomes – Customer Service with Pride: Always greet customers with a smile and provide excellent service, going the extra mile for our community.
- Store Standards: Play a vital role in ensuring everything runs smoothly.
- Customer Satisfaction: Use your product knowledge, stay updated with promotions, and create eye-catching displays to delight our customers.
- Transaction Accuracy: Have attention to detail to process all sales transactions accurately and efficiently, including ringing up and cashing up tills while ensuring company monies are secure.
- Stock Management: Take ownership of receiving, replenishing, and displaying stock within your team.
- Cleanliness: Help maintain a clean and tidy store environment at all times.
- Legal Compliance and Food Quality: You will be fully trained to ensure product quality, accurate labelling, and compliance with allergen regulations.
- Age-Related Sales: Ensure compliance with Age-Related Sales regulations and the Think 25 guidance.
- Health and Safety: Understand and follow all Health & Safety guidelines to keep colleagues and customers safe.
