Customs & Trade Compliance Specialist

Hybrid Role

Role Purpose

Responsible for ensuring full compliance with UK, Irish and EU customs and trade regulations by managing import and export activities, maintaining customs authorisations, overseeing compliance controls and supporting efficient cross-border operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with HMRC, Irish Revenue, the Windsor Framework, EU Customs Code and all relevant customs regulations.
  • Manage import and export customs operations, ensuring accurate declarations, tariff classification, customs valuation, origin determination, duty and VAT compliance.
  • Maintain AEO status and other customs authorisations.
  • Develop and maintain customs policies, procedures, SOPs and compliance controls.
  • Conduct compliance reviews, risk assessments and internal audits, supporting external regulatory audits where required.
  • Manage relationships with customs brokers, freight forwarders and regulatory authorities.
  • Monitor changes in customs legislation and implement process improvements.
  • Produce customs compliance reports, KPIs and risk assessments for senior management.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce customs costs through Free Trade Agreements, duty reliefs and process automation.
  • Lead customs-related projects, including systems implementation and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide guidance and training to internal stakeholders on customs and trade compliance requirements.

Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in customs operations and international trade compliance.
  • Strong knowledge of UK, Irish and EU customs regulations, Incoterms, tariff classification, customs valuation and Rules of Origin.
  • Experience maintaining AEO accreditation and customs authorisations.
  • Knowledge of import VAT, customs duty and customs special procedures.
  • Experience using customs management systems (e.g. SAP GTS or similar).
  • Strong analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to work across multiple business functions.
