About the Role

You’ll join the Cyber Security and Compliance Team, reporting to the Cyber Security and Resilience Manager, focusing on:

  • Proactively monitoring and protecting the ICT infrastructure from cyber threats.
  • Ensuring resilience of systems critical to patient services.
  • Proactively influencing ICT leadership to support digital transformation.

We’re seeking a resilient, initiative-driven thinker with: ✔ ability to overcome obstacles in a fast-paced environment ✔ strong communication and influencing skills to champion change ✔ strategic mindset to balance user needs with security compliance


Key Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Virtual SOC (Security Operations Centre) operations:
    • Monitor SIEM (Security Information & Event Management) systems and related controls.
    • Proactively detect, analyse, and evaluate suspicious/malicious activities.
    • Identify patterns and trends in cyber incidents to implement preventative and corrective actions.
  • Awareness and Compliance Support:
    • Contribute to the Cyber Security Awareness Programme.
    • Align with:
      • Information Security Management System (ISMS)
      • Cyber Essentials standards
      • NIS-R (Network and Information Systems Regulations)
  • Threat Research & Mitigation:
    • Maintain expert knowledge of cyber threats and conduct threat hunting.
    • Design and deliver measurement systems to monitor compliance.
  • Advisory Role:
    • Provide ICT, Information, and Cyber Security advice on queries.
    • Balance system security with user accessibility.

Key Skills in Action

  • Complex troubleshooting across ICT security, coding, and OS environments (e.g., SQL, Windows Technologies).
  • Technical analysis of logs and multi-vendor systems.
  • Collaboration to resolve technical issues with 3rd parties and stakeholders.

Experience & Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree-level education or equivalent experience in ICT/computing.
  • Evidence of Continual Professional Development (CPD).
  • Hands-on ICT Security knowledge:
    • Configuration of complex ICT systems, structured query languages, and multi-vendor environments.
    • Familiarity with system and OS logs.
  • NHS Wales ICT standards, including:
    • LHB ICT expertise.
    • Compliance with NIS-R, Cyber Essentials frameworks.
  • Training qualification: Level 3 Award in Education and Training (previous name: PTTLS).

Knowledge & Compliance

  • NHS IT Security policies, governance, and Healthcare Data Standards (e.g., Caldicott Principles).
  • Experience managing ICT support under Service Level Agreements for large/public sector organisations.

Experience Red Flags (Desirable)

  • Senior roles in cybersecurity, IT operations, or security awareness programmes.
  • Management or budgetary oversight of technical teams.
  • Experience implementing change management projects (especially in healthcare).

Desirable Technical & Certification Bonuses

  • Professional Certifications:
    • MCSE (Microsoft Certified Solutions Expert)
    • MCSP (Microsoft Certified Solutions Professional)
    • ITIL Foundation
  • BCS (British Computer Society), SDI (Society of Digital Information), or FedIP membership.
  • Expertise in:
    • Application Management
    • Emerging healthcare cyber-threats
    • Cross-NHS IT strategies (e.g., XDS or local trust platforms).

  • Critical Analysis & Problem-Solving:
    • Assess cybersecurity risks, threats, and incidents to develop mitigations.
    • Use research initiatives to identify attack techniques.
  • Communication Skills:
    • Present technical data clearly for all audiences.
    • Training and support for staff and colleagues.
    • Calm decision-making in high-pressure scenarios.
    • Minute-taking, documentation, and executive reporting.
  • Organizational Competency:
    • Prioritise tasks in fast-paced environments.
    • Establish individual systems/dashboards for monitoring capacity.
    • Travel capability across and beyond BCUHB.
