Data Architect – Full Time (Hybrid) | Railpen
About the Role
We are excited to offer an opportunity for a Data Architect to join our Data Architecture Technical Support Group (TSG). This is a full-time position with the flexibility of a hybrid working arrangement.

Railpen is responsible for safeguarding and investing around £34 billion in assets while administering multiple pension schemes, including the Railways Pension Scheme—one of the UK’s largest and longest-establishing pension funds.
With a heritage rooted in supporting the rail industry’s employees, Railpen takes a holistic approach to member care, balancing today’s needs with the future impact on their communities.
The Role
As the Data Architect, your core responsibilities will include:
- Providing architectural leadership across Railpen’s data ecosystem, ensuring alignment with Member Services, Finance, and Pension Investment Management (PIM).
- Defining and enforcing enterprise data standards, including modelling approaches, integration patterns, and platform design—to ensure scalable, secure, and AI-aligned solutions.
- Collaborating with investment stakeholders to translate business requirements into robust, scalable data models and platform architectures.
- Ensuring compliance and best practices in data integration (ETL/ELT), warehousing, and governance.

The Person
We’re seeking a hands-on Data Architect with strong technical expertise and exceptional stakeholder engagement skills. Ideal candidates will have:
✅ Proven experience with:
- MS SQL Server 2016+ or similar modern data platforms, with preference for Microsoft Fabric
- Investment data management—familiarity with domains like securities, holdings, pricing, transactions, risk, performance, and reference data
- Data warehousing, BI/reporting, or ETL/ELT designs for operational and analytical use
- Data integration and platform architecture amid regulatory, compliance, and operational demands
✅ Technical Proficiency:
- Hands-on ability to develop scalable data solutions
- Knowledge of Azure Data Factory, Python, or other tools in the Microsoft data stack
✅ Soft Skills & Mindset:
- Ability to bridge technical and business needs, explaining complex ideas clearly
- Commitment to integrity, collaboration, and constructive challenge
- Open to feedback and thriving in environments that encourage innovation and continuous learning
