Data Business Analyst

About the Role
Job Title: Data Business Analyst
This delivery-focused role supports key data transformation initiatives in a regulated banking environment, including:
- Implementation of an enterprise data lake
- Deployment of a business intelligence (BI) platform
- Establishment of a data governance framework
The Data Business Analyst collaborates closely with the Head of Data, business stakeholders, engineers, and vendors to:
- Translate business needs into clear requirements and trusted data products
- Embed strong governance, stewardship, quality, and control practices from day one
Key Work Outputs & Accountabilities
Discovery & Requirements Engineering
- Lead discovery activities to elicit, analyse, document, and prioritise business, data, reporting, and control requirements—ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and regulatory expectations.
- Translate business problems into structured use cases, epics, user stories, process maps, and acceptance criteria that are clear, testable, and traceable.
- Facilitate workshops, interviews, playback sessions, and decision forums with stakeholders to agree on scope, priorities, assumptions, and dependencies.
- Maintain the product backlog and supporting analysis artefacts, ensuring prioritisation reflects business value, risk, dependencies, and implementation readiness.
- Develop and maintain AS-IS / TO-BE process flows, data flows, source-to-target requirements, business rules, and non-functional requirements to support solution design.
- Support impact assessments, test planning, and UAT coordination, ensuring full traceability from requirement to implementation and business sign-off.
Data Lake
- Define and refine business requirements for the enterprise data lake, including:
- Priority use cases
- Source onboarding
- Data domains
- Consumption patterns
- Control requirements (Snowflake-based platform)
- Collaborate with data engineering and architecture teams to shape:
- Source-to-target requirements
- Logical data models
- Data product definitions
- Ingestion priorities
- Ensure data lake requirements address:
- Data quality, lineage, reconcilability
- Retention, security, access controls
- Auditability (complying with banking control standards)
- Support source-system onboarding by coordinating business input, profiling needs, issue resolution, and acceptance criteria.
- Validate delivered data lake outputs against requirements for usability, control, performance, and downstream consumption.
Enterprise BI (Power BI)
- Work alongside the Head of Data, data stewards, and engineering teams to coordinate target-state designs for data products.
- Capture and document reporting and analytics requirements, including:
- KPI definitions, dimensional needs
- Drill paths, security controls
- Audience-specific consumption needs
- Define reporting standards and semantic layer requirements, including:
- Dashboard acceptance criteria
- Data-to-report reconciliation controls
- Support rationalisation of legacy reports and transition to a controlled BI estate, identifying:
- Duplication, ownership, critical reports
- Migration priorities
- Ensure BI solutions are trustworthy and adoptable by defining:
- Business-facing metadata
- Usage guidance, validation criteria
- Release readiness requirements
- Coordinate testing and business validation, including:
- Defect triage, requirements clarification
- Sign-off management

Data Governance & Stewardship Enablement
- Implement data governance practices across domains, embedding:
- Ownership, decision rights
- Controls and stewardship responsibilities
- Define and document critical data elements, data quality rules, business definitions, and governance requirements.
- Develop and maintain:
- A business glossary
- Lineage and metadata artefacts (e.g., using Microsoft Purview)
- Establish and coach Data Stewards / Champions, supporting:
- Understanding of responsibilities
- Attending governance forums
- Issue management processes
- Prepare governance inputs and reporting for:
- Data Council
- Domain working groups
Delivery, Assurance & Stakeholder Enablement
- Coordinate across business, data, engineering, risk, and vendor teams to ensure deliverables are clear, coherent, and aligned with scope and timelines.
- Support Agile delivery practices, including:
- Backlog refinement
- Dependency management
- Story elaboration
- Traceability (Azure DevOps, Jira)
- Conduct quality assurance activities, such as:
- Requirements reviews
- Test execution support
- Defect triage
- Validation of delivered outputs
- Develop stakeholder materials, training inputs, and business guidance to support adoption.
- Gather user feedback and operational insight to drive continuous improvement in usability, trust, and business adoption.

Required Knowledge & Experience
Essential Qualifications
Strong Business Analysis skills in data and analytics programs within financial services, with proficiency in:
- Requirements elicitation, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement
- Disciplined change delivery
- Experience delivering data initiatives across business and technology teams, translating requirements into actionable outcomes.
Technical Expertise:
- Agile delivery expertise (Scrum/Kanban) using Azure DevOps/Jira for backlog management and refinement.
- Exposure to Snowflake, SQL (data profiling and validation), and Power BI (in both delivery support and business-facing roles).
- Data governance and management concepts:
- Data quality rules, critical data elements (CDEs)
- Business glossary, lineage, stewardship, governance forums
- Awareness of banking-specific risk, control, and regulatory requirements
- Ability to translate regulatory policies into business and data requirements.
Desirable Qualifications
- Exposure to data catalogue governance tooling, such as Microsoft Purview (metadata, glossary, lineage)
- Qualifications/certifications in relevant fields (see below).
Formal Qualifications & Certifications
Essential
- Post-secondary school education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in:
- Business, Information Systems, Data, or related discipline.
Preferred
- Familiarity with DAMA-DMBOK principles and data governance frameworks, including data quality, stewardship, and metadata management.
Desirable
Additional training or certification in:
- Business Analysis, data analytics, data governance, or Agile methodologies
