Purpose of the Job

As a Data Centre Technician, you will support the Data Centre Management Team to deliver a customer-focused, cost-effective, and efficient service.

Key aspects of the role include:

  • Conducting planned preventative maintenance
  • Completing reactive works on building infrastructure, plant, and equipment according to agreed service levels
  • Responding to, escalating, and managing site engineering emergencies
  • Undertaking small installation works, project works, repairs to building fabric, and handyman duties to meet contractual and legal obligations

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure routine maintenance of all building plant, equipment, and systems adheres to service level agreements.
  • Perform fault diagnosis on both mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Respond to Building Management System (BMS) alarms, escalate, and implement emergency repairs.
  • Manage and ensure appropriate controls within Permit to Work systems.
  • Follow relevant Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) standards for the maintenance industry.
  • Ensure suitable spares are available for maintenance needs.
  • Prepare and follow Method Statements and Risk Assessments to maintain safe working practices.
  • Supervise engineering subcontractors, ensuring compliance with contractual commitments and site procedures.
  • Develop strong working relationships with CBRE staff and client staff.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy working environment while ensuring compliance with company policies, as well as client site policies.
  • Present a professional image of CBRE to clients and visitors, and uphold excellence in customer service.
  • Foster personal development and lifelong learning to maintain professional and technical skills.
  • Keep QHSE logbooks, shift handovers, and client reports up to date.
  • Show flexibility in covering overtime to manage holiday leave of other team members.
  • Identify and report potential hazards.

Personal Specification

Education

  • Strong foundational and educational background.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English, mathematics, and IT skills.

Training (Essential)

  • Formal mechanical and electrical services maintenance training.
  • City & Guilds 236 parts 1 & 2 (or updated to 18th Edition/Wiring Regulations), or an equivalent qualification.
  • Up-to-date skills in:
    • Building Management Systems (BMS)
    • Health and Safety ACOPs
    • Fire and environmental controls
    • Building controls
    • Health and Safety
    • Formal health and safety training such as IOSH Safe Working in Electrical Environments
    • Safe Operation of High Voltage Equipment (S4)
  • Experience in maintaining critical environment facilities including:
    • UPS systems
    • BMS operation
    • Emergency standby generators
    • Testing and managing electrical systems (including dual-fed systems)

Experience (Essential)

  • Extensive mechanical and electrical engineering experience, including:
    • Reactive and planned preventative maintenance.
  • Sound understanding of health and safety obligations specific to maintenance activities.

Experience (Desirable)

  • Experience with High Voltage/AP (Analogue Protection)
  • Prior experience working in data centres
  • Ability to create and implement switching schedules

Aptitudes

  • Strong verbally and written communication skills.
  • Operational: Organisation and discipline with proven written English ability.
  • Proficiency in computer skills to efficiently manage multiple systems (reports to CBRE, client site systems, logging scheduled maintenance, work reports, incident tracking).
  • Competence using tools like Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Strong abilities to learn and develop technical knowledge \
  • and understanding of systems and processes specific to this role.

Character

  • Commitment to delivering excellent customer service.
  • Calm under pressure with decisive problem-solving skills in fast-paced environments.
  • Physically fit to carry tools and components manually (up to 20kg).
  • Able to ascend and descend vertical access equipment; comfortable working at heights, including on roofs.
  • A team player with a collaborative approach working alongside CBRE staff and client associates at all levels.

Circumstances

  • Ability to work unsupervised, demonstrating autonomy while remaining effective in a team setting.
  • Shift pattern flexibility required:
    • 4 on, 4 off shifts of 12 hours (covering both day and night shifts).
    • Including weekends, holiday periods, Christmas celebrations, and bank holidays.
  • Expected to cover holiday and emergency leave for other team members.
  • Must have the ability to directly interact with client management and manage reasonable client requests.
  • Mandatory background check: eligibility for enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service), alongside a 5-year history check and ability to obtain appropriate security clearance.
