Data Centre Engineering Operations - Chief Engineer - Hemel Hempstead, LHR DCEO

Chief Engineer – AWS Infrastructure Services

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We’re the team responsible for ensuring our customers have continual access to the cloud services they rely on.

We’re looking for a Chief Engineer to ensure the safe, secure, and efficient operation of all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment across AWS data centers.

About the Role

As Chief Engineer, you will:

  • Be a singular focal point for facility operations across owned and operated data centers.
  • Oversee day-to-day maintenance and high-impact projects, from conception to delivery.
  • Work autonomously with limited direct management while collaborating globally with engineering, automation, procurement, and finance teams.
  • Drive cost savings and operational efficiency through continuous innovation.

You’ll train, standardise, and optimise engineering operations—keeping AWS’s foundational infrastructure functioning securely and resiliently, every second of every day.

A critical role that requires technical expertise, dedication, and the ability to work across boundaries.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Technical Leadership

  • Train and mentor engineering teams for effective electrical/mechanical equipment troubleshooting.
  • Lead real-world training exercises (e.g., standby diesel generators, switchgear, UPSs, AHUs, chillers).
  • Oversee 24/7 maintenance and emergency response for data center infrastructure:
    • Planned and corrective maintenance.
    • Emergency troubleshooting, investigation, mitigation, and recovery.
  • Move from root cause analysis to failure prevention—saving Amazon systems from disruptions.
  • Avoid outages by ensuring compliance with SLAs for facility performance.

Scaling & Innovating Infrastructure Operations

  • Lead large-scale projects to improve reliability and efficiency in our global data centers:
    • Procure contracts, track cost projections, and document processes for improved implementations.
  • Partner with teams to increase resilience (e.g., lift-and-shift-out strategies for region expansion).
  • Architects and deploys best practices for technicians and vendors.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
