M&E Shift Technician

Business Sector: Data Centre Solutions Location: London, UK Reports to: Engineering Manager

Purpose of the Role

This position ensures full compliance with all Customer-Specific Service Level Agreements while delivering exceptional maintenance and operational performance in a 24/7 shift environment. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing managed services strategies alongside colleagues to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Directly liaising with the Shift Manager to meet agreed timeframes and maintain positive client relations.
  • Ensuring optimal environmental controls (humidity, temperature) for critical building systems.
  • Conducting Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), reactive, and breakdown works on mechanical and electrical systems, including UPS, Generators, HV, PDUs, CRAC units, and associated fault-finding using graphical information and alarm data.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Operations

  • Execute routine PPM per scheduled tasks and asset lists while maintaining industry-standard practices.
  • Oversee reactive maintenance (including HV tasks) and identify areas for improvement, ensuring timely escalation of issues.
  • Maintain serviceable plant conditions by swiftly remedying faults and coordinating with the Shift Manager on concerns.
  • Uphold spare part availability, provide preventive action estimates, and complete detailed documentation (PPM logs, GA reports).

Safety & Compliance

  • Create and adhere to Method Statements and Risk Assessments for all tasks.
  • Maintain a safe working environment, wearing uniform and PPE at all times.
  • Report incidents, accidents, or hazards promptly.
  • Stay compliant with contractual KPIs and SLAs.

Support & Administration

  • Supervise on-site sub-contractors, ensuring permits and risk assessments are issued.
  • Provide unplanned coverage for holidays, sickness, or shift absences.
  • Ensure ** periodic shift handoovers** with documented logbooks for facility reliability.
  • Handle delegated duties from the Engineering Manager, including acting in their absence.

Required Qualifications and Experience

Education

  • A strong basic education, excellent written and verbal English, and competency in arithmetic.

Training & Qualifications

  • Formally trained in mechanical/electrical/refrigeration maintenance (e.g., City & Guilds qualifications).
  • Valid HV Authorised or Authorised Person qualification (essential).
  • Experience with Building Management Systems. For advanced roles, BS 7671:2018 18th Edition regulations proficiency is beneficial.

Essential Experience

  • Proven expertise in humidity/temperature control, UPS, generators, HVAC/refrigeration systems, and building automation.
  • Critical environment experience (preferably in data centres).

Aptitudes

  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Good physical fitness (ability to work in demanding conditions).

Character

  • Customer-focused mindset; applaud attitudes resilient to high-work environments.
  • Proven track record of decisive yet collaborative working in a team environment.

Working Conditions

  • Shifts (-24/7 operations), lone working, and unpredictability apply (specific risks highlighted above).
  • Consistent transport access and flexibility on timeside availability (including covering shifts).
