Job Title: M&E Shift Technician

Business Sector: Data Centre Solutions Location: London, UK Reports to: Engineering Manager

Purpose of the Job

The M&E Shift Technician will:

  • Control and implement deliverables against all allocated Customer Specific Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • Contribute directly to the development and success of the Managed Services function, collaborating with colleagues to refine and implement departmental strategy, objectives, and improvement processes.
  • Operate across a 24/7 shift rota, ensuring coverage for critical site requirements. The role requires flexibility and commitment to on-call availability where possible.
  • Liaise with the Shift Manager to ensure efficient service delivery, maintaining strict adherence to timelines.
  • Act as a face of CBRE, fostering positive relationships with customers while upholding professional standards.
  • Maintain optimal environmental conditions, particularly in critical building systems.
  • Perform Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM), reactive, and breakdown works on mechanical and electrical infrastructure. Key systems include:
    • UPS
    • Generators
    • High-voltage (HV)
    • Power Distribution Units (PDUs)
    • Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units (or equivalents)
    • Requires proficiency in fault-finding through graphical information and interpretation of alarm data.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Operations

  • Conduct routine PPMs for all mechanical and electrical plant, adhering to site task schedules and asset lists, whilst meeting industry practices.
  • Deliver reactive and breakdown works efficiently, ensuring maintenance of plant reliability. Proactively identify and suggest improvements.
  • Ensure the availability of suitable spares for both maintenance and emergency repairs, providing parts lists and estimated repair timelines.

Safety & Compliance

  • Hold Authorised Person status for high-voltage (HV) work to meet contract requirements.
  • Operate in strict adherence to safety protocols, immediately escalating incidents or hazards to the line manager.
  • Complete and submit all necessary documentation (PPM, reactive work, breakdowns) promptly to the Shift Manager and contract administrator.
  • Prepare Method Statements and Risk Assessments for all tasks to ensure safe working practices.

Client & Team Engagement

  • Build strong relationships with CBRE personnel and client representatives.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and uphold CBRE’s image in all interactions.
  • Supervise sub-contractors, ensuring compliance with permits, risk assessments, and best practices.

Shift & Administrative Responsibilities

  • Provide flexible coverage, including holiday and sickness leave as needed.
  • Ensure full shift complement as schedules require, including optional lone working when necessary.
  • Take over duties of the Shift Manager on an as-needed basis.
  • Communicate absences, lateness, and annual leave as per company procedures.
  • Monitor and respond to e-mails, job requests, and training modules to meet deadlines.
  • Complete weekly timesheets by 9 AM (Friday) and submit overtime paperwork via the correct channel.

Additional Duties

  • Participate in drill/scenario training and technical assessment tests.
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the Engineering Manager within their existing skill set.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • Strong written and spoken English along with fundamental mathematical skills.
  • A sound basic education as a minimum qualification.

Training & Certification

  • Formal qualification in Mechanical/Electrical/Refrigeration Building Services Maintenance, preferably through City & Guilds (worldwide recognition).
  • HV Authorised Person / HV qualification (essential).
  • Current knowledge of BS7671 2018 (18th Edition Regulations).

Experience (Essential)

  • Experience in humidity & temperature-controlled environments for service-critical applications.
  • Comprehensive, hands-on experience with:
    • Generator systems
    • Electrical infrastructure (HV)
    • UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supplies)
    • HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air-Conditioning) systems
    • Chillers & Building Management Systems (BMS).
  • Data centre operations experience is vital for understanding critical environments.

Aptitudes

  • Clear and concise verbal communication.
  • Strong written English skills.
  • Demonstrated physical fitness due to the hands-on nature of the role.
