About The Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer to join our client's dynamic team in Cardiff, working on a hybrid basis. This is a pivotal role designed to lead the development of a modern cloud data platform from inception, offering a greenfield opportunity to shape the organization’s data architecture. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing scalable, secure, and efficient data solutions that support reporting, analytics, and emerging AI initiatives. This role provides a unique chance to influence technical strategies, establish best practices, and build a robust data environment that aligns with organizational goals. The Senior Data Engineer will collaborate closely with stakeholders across departments, translating business requirements into scalable data solutions, and mentoring junior engineers to foster a high-performing team.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background with demonstrated experience in cloud-based data engineering. Essential qualifications include proficiency in SQL and Python, with a preference for PySpark. Candidates should have hands-on experience building and managing data platforms on Azure, including familiarity with Azure Databricks, Delta Lake, and Azure Data Lake. A solid understanding of designing ETL/ELT pipelines, data modelling, and Power BI reporting is required. Knowledge of Git, CI/CD pipelines, and modern engineering practices is essential, along with a comprehensive understanding of data governance, security, and access control. Certifications or experience in data security, DataOps, or DataSecOps will be advantageous. The candidate should demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills, the ability to work independently, and a proactive approach to technical challenges.

Responsibilities
- Design and develop a modern Azure-based data platform that meets organizational needs for scalability, security, and performance.
- Create and maintain scalable ETL/ELT pipelines utilizing Databricks, Spark, and Azure services to ensure efficient data processing.
- Implement secure and governed data solutions following DataOps and DataSecOps principles to ensure data integrity and compliance.
- Develop high-quality data models to support reporting, analytics, and self-service data access for various stakeholders.
- Design, develop, and optimise Power BI semantic models and reporting architectures to deliver actionable insights.
- Monitor and enhance data quality, security, and platform performance, ensuring reliable and timely data delivery.
- Champion best practices in CI/CD, automation, and engineering to streamline development workflows and improve deployment efficiency.
- Mentor junior data engineers, fostering a collaborative environment and sharing technical knowledge to elevate team capabilities.
- Work closely with business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into scalable, efficient data solutions.
- Stay updated with the latest industry trends and technologies to continuously improve the data platform and engineering practices.
