Data Engineer
Azure Data Engineer (Databricks) – London – Hybrid (2 Days Per Week)
Location: London – Hybrid (2 days per week office-based)
Contract Type: Open to Permanent or Contract
Start Date: Within 2 weeks
Salary/Day Rate: Flexible, competitive market rates available
A growing consultancy is seeking an experienced Azure Data Engineer to join its Data Engineering practice following a major new client win.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a high-performing team driving a large-scale data platform transformation and cloud migration project. The client will transition their legacy SQL Server estate to a modern Azure-based data platform, heavily leveraging Databricks.
The client prioritises technical expertise—market salary/rates are negotiated with cost flexibility in mind. Their focus is on securing the right candidate rather than adhering to rigid budgets.
About the Project
- The role involves migrating data workloads from on-premises SQL Server to Azure/Databricks.
- Tasks include:
- Designing and building scalable data pipelines.
- Optimising data processing and cloud architectures.
- Establishing best-practice data engineering standards.
- The project emphasises modern cloud data technologies, automation, and engineering excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build scalable data solutions within Azure.
- Lead or contribute to migration of data platforms from SQL Server to Azure.
- Develop ETL/ELT pipelines using modern data engineering practices.
- Build and optimise Azure Databricks solutions.
- Collaborate with solution architects, consultants, and client stakeholders.
- Implement data models and data lake architectures.
- Drive automation, monitoring, and performance optimisation.
- Support data governance, security, and best practices throughout the migration.
- Contribute to architectural decisions and future-state data platform design.

Required Experience
We are looking for ** Azure Data Engineers ** with a proven track record in similar cloud migration and modernisation programmes. Essential experience includes:

- Advanced SQL development & optimisation
- Azure Data Factory (ADF)
- Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS)
- ETL/ELT development
- Data warehousing & dimensional modelling
- PySpark
- Python
- Git (version control)
- CI/CD for data pipelines
- Experience designing cloud-native data platforms
Highly Desirable (Non-Essential) Skills:
- Delta Lake
- Azure Synapse Analytics
- Microsoft Fabric
- Apache Spark
- Terraform or Infrastructure as Code
- Azure DevOps
- Power BI
- Data governance/ security frameworks
- Streaming & real-time data processing
- Consultancy or client-facing delivery experience

Ideal Candidate Profile
- Successfully migrated SQL Server to Azure (proven track record).
- Comfortable working in consultancy environments with stakeholder engagement.
- Can operate independently and collaboratively in a team setting.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
- Passionate about modern data engineering and cloud technologies.
Location & Work Arrangement
- Hybrid model: 2 days per week at the London office, remainder remote.
