Data Engineer – Birkenhead (Hybrid)

Job Title

Data Engineer | Location: Birkenhead (Hybrid) | 35 hours per week

What You’ll Be Doing

As a Data Engineer, you’ll help strengthen and modernise MDIS’s data estate, working across:

  • SQL Server environments (improving existing systems)
  • New Azure data platforms (leading adoption)
  • Azure DevOps (enforcing structured, governed development practices)

Your day-to-day tasks will include:

  • Collaborating with stakeholders to design and deliver scalable, high-quality data pipelines and models across both SQL Server and Azure.
  • Developing modular, reusable data components that enhance maintainability, performance, and governance.
  • Owning end-to-end delivery, including:
    • Deployment
    • Monitoring
    • Proactive issue resolution
  • Driving continuous improvement through:
    • Transparent communication
    • Code reviews
    • Adoption of modern data engineering practices

What You Bring

What You’ll Need

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency in SQL Server with strong T-SQL development experience.
  • Ability to design modular and reusable data components.
  • Knowledge of data modelling, schema design, and performance optimisation.
  • Familiarity with ETL/ELT principles and data pipeline development.
  • Git & version control practices (e.g., GitHub, Azure Repos).
  • Exposure to Azure data tools (Azure SQL, Data Factory, or Synapse).
  • Understanding of structured development practices and Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Detail-oriented problem-solving and stakeholder communication.

Desired Experience

  • Experience improving or maintaining SQL Server environments.
  • Prior exposure to cloud-based data platforms (preferably Azure).
  • Work in structured development or SDLC environments.
  • Participation in system improvements, modernisation, or digital transformation initiatives.
