Department: Data, Strategy & Analytics
Location: London or Birmingham (Hybrid) - 2 days in the office
Role Purpose
The Data Engineer plays a key role in supporting the design, implementation, and maintenance of ERGO’s data processing infrastructure. Systems developed will underpin analytics, business intelligence, financial monitoring, and bordereaux ETL, with a strong focus on data integrity and timeliness. This role will need to be able to communicate effectively with individuals from a variety of technical backgrounds, both internally and externally. The role will sit within a small team to work directly with stakeholders on critical projects. A successful candidate will have an engineering background demonstrating strong foundational knowledge, an adaptability to new and changing situations, and a desire to produce high-quality output which benefits the business and its employees. Previous experience in a financial setting is useful but not required. A highly rewarding position for someone motivated by creating tangible solutions for real problems with direct feedback.
Responsibility
Data Platform & Architecture
- Support the design, build, and maintenance of scalable data platforms and architectures to support analytics and reporting.
- Contribute to architectural decisions relating to data storage, processing, and access.
Data Pipeline Development
- Support the development and maintenance of reliable ETL/ELT pipelines to ingest data from multiple internal and external sources, including bordereaux and operational systems.
- Ensure pipelines are performant, resilient, and well-documented.
- Implement data validation, monitoring, and error-handling mechanisms.

Data Modelling & Quality
- Ensure that logical and physical data models are optimized for analytics and BI consumption.
- Work to improve data standards and ensure accuracy and integrity during data ingestion.
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
- Work closely with other employees of ERGO, enabling them to use data effectively.
- Partner with Bordereaux Operations to support automated ingestion, validation, and transformation of bordereaux data.
Governance, Security & Compliance
- Ensure data platforms and processes align with regulatory requirements, including GDPR and industry standards.
- Support audit and assurance activities by providing technical documentation and evidence.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation
- Identify opportunities to improve performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency of data platforms.
- Evaluate new tools, technologies, and patterns to enhance the data engineering capability.
- Contribute to automation and AI-enabled data processing initiatives.
Ad-Hoc Work
- Support department projects and carry out other delegated tasks requested by senior department members.
What you will bring
Expected Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or Engineering; or equivalent demonstration of technical background.
Aptitude:
- Active and motivated problem solving.
- Strong communication for gathering requirements and presenting solutions.
- Adaptability to a changing financial landscape.

Essential Knowledge:
- SQL (MSSQL)
- Python (inc. common data processing modules)
- Principles of Canonicalization/ETL Processes
Useful Knowledge
- Experience with Insurance or other financial institutions.
- Microsoft Fabric / Pyspark.
