Job Title: Data Engineer
FDM is a global business and technology consultancy seeking a Data Engineer to work for our client within the retail sector. This is initially a 3 month contract with the potential to extend and will be a role that will be based in Leeds.
Our client is looking for a hands-on Data Engineer to design and build the data pipelines that will extend our data platform into new domains. Working alongside a Product Owner, you will move data from source through to production-ready models that power analytics and insight for the business and its partners.
This is a delivery-focused role for an engineer who is as comfortable modelling data and building robust pipelines as they are working with stakeholders to understand what the business needs from its data. You will help shape the underlying data architecture as the platform grows, so a pragmatic, quality-first mindset matters as much as technical skill.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain data pipelines to reliably ingest, transform and load data from a range of internal and external sources.
- Design and implement data models that support consistent, reusable and well-governed data for downstream analytics and reporting.
- Develop transformations in cloud data warehouse environments, optimising for performance, cost and scalability.
- Partner closely with the Product Owner and analysts to translate business and reporting requirements into technical data solutions.
- Uphold data quality and governance through validation, testing and monitoring, ensuring pipelines are production-ready and dependable.
- Contribute to the platform's data architecture, helping extend it into new data domains as the offering grows.
- Communicate clearly across both technical and non-technical audiences, documenting models, pipelines and data definitions.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
