About The Role

We are seeking an experienced Principal Data Engineer to join Genomics England’s dynamic team. This senior-level individual contributor role requires a proven track record of leading complex data engineering initiatives within highly regulated, large-scale environments. As a Principal Data Engineer, you will be instrumental in shaping the technical direction and strategy for data platforms that support critical clinical and research operations. Your expertise will influence the design, development, and deployment of scalable, secure, and reliable data solutions across cloud and hybrid infrastructures. You will operate at both strategic and hands-on levels, setting standards, defining best practices, and ensuring alignment with organizational and national priorities. Your role will involve collaborating with cross-functional teams, including data architects, bioinformaticians, product managers, and senior engineers, to deliver innovative data solutions that meet strict governance, privacy, and security requirements. You will also play a key role in mentoring junior engineers, driving technical excellence, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. This position offers an exciting opportunity to impact national healthcare infrastructure and contribute to groundbreaking genomic research, all while working in a collaborative and innovative environment.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience operating at senior or Principal level in data engineering
  • Extensive experience designing and delivering enterprise-scale data platforms and systems
  • Deep expertise in modern data architecture, cloud infrastructure, and scalable data processing
  • Strong hands-on programming skills in Python and SQL
  • Proficiency in data modelling, data lifecycle management, metadata, and governance
  • Experience working within complex regulated environments such as healthcare, genomics, or research
  • Understanding of security by design principles and handling highly sensitive data
  • Ability to influence architectural and data engineering strategies across multiple teams
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement skills, with experience working with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Knowledge of genomics, bioinformatics, or clinical data platforms is desirable
  • Familiarity with standards such as GA4GH, OMOP, or FHIR
  • Experience with orchestration tools like Airflow, Prefect, or AWS Glue
  • Knowledge of modern data architecture patterns such as data mesh or Lakehouse

Responsibilities

  • Define and influence technical standards and data engineering best practices across multiple data platforms and pipelines
  • Lead the design and delivery of large-scale, complex data solutions in cloud and hybrid environments
  • Shape architectural direction for enterprise data platforms, including Lakehouse, distributed, and event-driven systems
  • Act as a technical authority, guiding teams on data engineering standards and architectural principles
  • Collaborate closely with senior engineers, architects, bioinformaticians, and product teams to ensure technical excellence
  • Ensure all data engineering approaches comply with governance, privacy, security, and regulatory requirements
  • Drive adoption of modern engineering practices such as DataOps, DevOps, CI/CD, automation, and observability
  • Enhance platform resilience, performance, and operational maturity of critical data systems
  • Evaluate and recommend new tools, technologies, and approaches to improve data engineering capabilities
  • Mentor and develop junior data engineers, fostering capability uplift across teams
  • Contribute to organization-wide standards, communities, and governance related to data architecture and engineering
