Data Engineer – Business Data Team

Department: Internal Technology Location: Oxford, UK

Application Note: We are open to considering candidates who require visa sponsorship, subject to eligibility and company approval.

We are gathering a talented Data Engineer to join our growing Business Data team within Internal Technology. The role focuses on building, maintaining, and evolving a centrally governed business data platform, supporting analytical and operational use cases across the organisation.

In this collaborative, intellectually stimulating environment, you’ll partner with Senior and Lead Data Engineers and business stakeholders to develop and maintain reliable data pipelines, while deepening your expertise in cloud-native data platforms and enterprise data solutions. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys translating business data requirements into scalable, robust technical solutions.


Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Design and maintain data ingestion and transformation pipelines, sourcing from enterprise systems (e.g., finance, CRM, HR, collaboration platforms)
  • Develop and manage data transformations to support business intelligence and analytical use cases
  • Contribute to dimensional and analytics-friendly data models, ensuring ease of querying for reporting
  • Work with senior engineers to enforce data engineering best practices, standards, and governance controls
  • Oversee data quality, validation, and monitoring processes to ensure trusted reporting, insights, and decisions
  • Collaborate with analysts, engineers, and business stakeholders to understand reporting needs and translate them into technical solutions
  • Contribute to documentation, data lineage, and technical knowledge sharing across the team

Requirements

Required Attributes

Candidates must demonstrate:

  • Experience delivering data engineering solutions in production environments
  • Practical proficiency in:
    • SQL (for data transformation and modelling)
    • Python (for data processing or orchestration)
    • Cloud-based or modern data platforms (e.g., Microsoft Fabric or equivalent)
    • Ingesting data from relational databases or SaaS platforms via APIs
  • Understanding of core data engineering principles, including:
    • Data modelling (e.g., dimensional models)
    • Data quality and validation techniques
    • Basic data governance principles
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail
  • Clear communication skills enabling collaboration with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to manage tasks independently while contributing effectively to a team environment

Desirable (but not mandatory) Attributes

  • Exposure to PySpark or notebook-based data development
  • Familiarity with enterprise systems (e.g., ERP, CRM, HR platforms)
  • Experience in governed, multi-environment (DEV/TEST/PROD) data platforms
  • Awareness of CI/CD or DevOps practices for data engineering
  • Interest in building scalable and maintainable data platforms in an analysis-driven organisation
