Data Engineering Manager

Salary - £80,000 - £90,000

Surrey/ Hybrid

We’re looking for an experienced Data Engineering Manager to lead an Agile data engineering team delivering high-quality, business-critical data solutions. This is an opportunity to combine technical leadership, people management, and strategic influence while helping shape the future of a modern enterprise data platform.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a team of 3 – 5 data engineers through coaching, mentoring, and performance support.
  • Provide technical leadership across multiple agile delivery squads, ensuring high-quality engineering standards and best practices.
  • Support the migration of data workloads from legacy technologies to Microsoft Azure, helping teams adopt modern cloud engineering approaches.
  • Drive consistency through engineering standards, service excellence, and resilient, cost-effective data pipelines.
  • Work closely with Architecture and Technology teams to influence the design and evolution of the enterprise data platform.
  • Facilitate technical workshops, estimation sessions, and solution discussions for new initiatives.
  • Identify and resolve delivery risks, dependencies, and technical issues impacting engineering squads.
  • Champion CI/CD practices, operational efficiency, and FinOps principles.
  • Contribute to leadership discussions around team planning, delivery strategy, and continuous improvement.

About You

You’ll be an experienced data engineering professional who enjoys enabling others to succeed. Whether you’re already managing a team or you’re a senior technical leader who’s been mentoring and guiding engineers, you’ll be comfortable leading people and driving technical excellence.

You’ll bring:

  • A strong background in hands-on data engineering.
  • Experience providing technical leadership, coaching, or mentoring engineers. Formal line management experience is welcome but not essential.
  • Strong knowledge of modern data engineering principles and cloud platforms, ideally including Azure Synapse or Databricks.
  • Experience delivering data products or platforms using Agile methodologies.
  • Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and FinOps principles.
  • Experience working across multiple Agile teams using Jira.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to work across technical and business teams.
  • The ability to balance technical leadership with delivery and people development.

We’re open to candidates from a range of technical environments. Experience leading data engineering teams using other cloud platforms or enterprise data technologies is equally valuable, provided you have a solid understanding of modern data engineering practices and a willingness to learn new technologies.

This role is a predominantly remote role – happy to discuss hybrid working patterns.
