Data Governance Consultant (Retail Experience Required) – Remote in UK
A remote role based in the United Kingdom (listed on behalf of a partner company).
About the Role
This consultant position focuses on strengthening enterprise data trust and ensuring high-quality, well-governed data assets that drive retail analytics and decision-making.
The Data Governance Consultant will:
- Define and enforce data quality standards across reporting and Business Intelligence (BI) environments.
- Work closely with analytics, engineering, and BI teams to validate data pipelines and ensure consistency across dashboards and curated datasets.
- Support SQL-driven analysis, dbt validation, and Snowflake-based data exploration to improve data reliability.
- Enhance data transparency through metadata, lineage tracking, and governance frameworks.
- Resolve data issues by identifying anomalies, documenting root causes, and driving remediation efforts.

Accountabilities & Key Responsibilities
- ✅ Define and maintain data quality by establishing and documenting data quality rules, business definitions, and validation standards for critical reporting and analytics datasets.
- ✅ Perform deep data profiling using SQL, dbt, and Snowflake to validate transformations, investigate anomalies, and ensure data readiness for reporting.
- ✅ Collaborate with BI/analytics teams to ensure dashboards, KPIs, and semantic layers rely on trusted, well-governed datasets aligned with business expectations.
- ✅ Monitor and resolve data quality issues by investigating recurring problems, identifying root causes, and coordinating remediation with engineering and ownership stakeholders.
- ✅ Enhance governance frameworks by maintaining metadata repositories, data lineage documentation, business glossaries, and issue tracking systems.
- ✅ Promote data governance best practices through stakeholder education on data standards, ownership models, certified data usage, and stewardship principles.

Requirements
- Relevant experience in:
- Data Governance, Stewardship, Data Quality, Analytics, BI, or Data Management within complex enterprise environments.
- Advanced SQL expertise with hands-on experience in:
- Data profiling, validation, reconciliation
- Investigating discrepancies across datasets
- Proven experience with dbt, including:
- Writing tests
- Documentation
- Lineage tracking
- Source freshness checks
- Validation workflows
- Experience with Snowflake (or similar cloud data warehouses), including knowledge of:
- Performance optimisation
- Data structures
- Strong understanding of data governance principles, including:
- Metadata management
- Data lineage
- Data lifecycle
- Data quality dimensions
- Familiarity with BI concepts, such as:
- Dimensional modelling
- KPIs
- Semantic layers
- Analytical mindset with the ability to trace issues across source systems, transformations, and reporting layers.
- Experience using collaboration tools, like:
- Ticketing systems
- Version control platforms
- Documentation repositories
- Added preference:

- Agile/Scrum delivery model familiarity
