We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share, so please include clearly any information regarding your preferred working arrangements on your application.
We create better places for people, wildlife and the environment. We put the climate emergency at the heart of everything we do and help society adapt to environmental challenges such as flooding, drought and sea level rise. We improve and protect the quality of our air, land and water by tackling pollution. We work with businesses to help them comply with environmental regulations and believe a healthy and diverse environment enhances people’s lives and contributes to sustainable and resilient economic growth.
This internal/external facing role backfilling a vacancy, due to promotion in the team, is an exciting opportunity to contribute to our Geospatial development across the whole of the organisation, enabling our colleagues to deliver our challenging environmental ambitions.
We’re looking for a GIS Technical Officer with extensive user, data and information management experience using ESRI products with a proven record of effective delivery.
Our ideal candidate will combine a strong drive to modernise with a passion for improving the environment.
Working in the National GIS Team you will provide data management for our spatial tools and systems and work closely with our customers to ensure best use of our resources. You will be able to identify opportunities to reduce effort and duplication in the way we manage our geospatial data and work with other teams to ensure we have a common approach on data management activities such as metadata, data quality techniques, data standards and custodianship.
The Team
The National GIS Team provide Geospatial services and lead on their use in the EA. We manage national spatial data delivered through a variety of tools including the National Data Store, Easimap, ArcGIS Pro, and ESRI’s ArcGIS Enterprise services which we configure and maintain for use across the business, including Incident Management. We also manage and support access to ArcGIS Online. A joined-up, well-managed, modern suite of services is essential for our users.
Experience/Skills Required
You’ll be able to show that you care about the environment and have the technical skills, experience and drive to help your colleagues deliver their roles. Qualified to at least degree standard, or with equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline, you’ll possess advanced computer skills and experience of using ArcGIS tools for example ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise or ArcGIS Online.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
