Job Opportunity: Data Manager
About the Role
JMG Group—a top 30 insurance broking group backed by private equity, based in Guiseley, West Yorkshire—is accelerating its data strategy to support organic and acquisitive growth. As Data Manager, you will steward the group’s data platform, governance, and analytics, ensuring reliable, secure, and timely management information (MI), while leveraging SQL, Power BI, and applied AI to generate actionable insights.
This role blends technical leadership with stakeholder engagement across the Group, positioning you to play a pivotal part in JMG’s expansion.
Our Environment
You will collaborate closely with IT teams and broader Group functions. The role is hands-on, outcomes-driven, and focused on providing leadership with consistent, actionable intelligence as the business scales.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Data platform ownership: Oversee the design, operation, and evolution of the SQL Server data warehouse. Establish best practices for schema design and performance tuning in SQL Server/SSMS.
- ETL/ELT & integration: Define and manage pipelines (e.g., SSIS, Power Query) to consolidate sources, including Acturis (core broking systems) and newly acquired businesses. Ensure timely, accurate, and comprehensive integration into Group reporting.
- AI for analytics: Introduce and steward responsible AI to enhance insights and automate MI.
- Power BI enablement: Own datasets, semantic models, DAX development, row-level security, gateway configuration, and performance. Partner with BI Developers to deliver automated, actionable dashboards for leadership and operational teams.

Governance & Stakeholder Engagement
- Data governance: Implement policies for data quality, validation, and exception reporting. Document processes, embed error resolution workflows.
- Stakeholder management: Build strong relationships across Finance, Compliance, Operations, Insurer Relations, and business units. Translate requirements into robust data solutions and ensure MI adoption.
Team & Strategic Delivery
- Team leadership: Mentor and develop BI Developers/Analysts to execute data strategy.
- Acquisition reviews: Identify potential synergies in new integrations.
- Roadmap & delivery: Maintain a roadmap covering platform improvements, AI use-cases, acquisition integration, and reporting simplification. Track benefits and adoption.
Key Skills Required
- Advanced SQL: Expertise in stored procedures, views, window functions, CTEs, temp tables, and query optimisation. Proficiency in SSMS query writing.
- Power BI: Significant delivery experience with DAX, Power Query, Row-Level Security (RLS), and model performance.
- ETL/ELT & Dimensional Modelling: Skills with SSIS, Power Query, and star schema designs.
- AI/ML Extraction: Experience with Python notebooks, Azure ML, or equivalent, with ability to operationalise models responsibly.
- Integration & MI Reliability: Proven track record delivering consistent Group MI post-acquisitions.
- Communication: Ability to explain complex data insights clearly across all business levels.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Skill in translating data needs into actionable requirements and driving adoption.
- Team Management: Experience leading, managing, and developing a team of BI analysts/developers.

Nice to Have Skills
- Experience with Acturis data extraction and broking MI automation.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Fabric/Azure.
- Exposure to API pipelines for reporting.
- Insurance industry experience (an asset).
- SSIS administration, Power BI governance, and Excel (advanced formulas, Power Pivot).
Qualifications
- Degree in a quantitative field (or equivalent experience).
- Microsoft certifications (DP-203, PL-300) considered advantageous.
- Evidence of continuous learning in data engineering, BI, and AI.
