Data Protection Coordinator - £34,183 p.a. + benefits

We are currently looking for a Data Protection Coordinator to join our Digital and Technology group.

This is a full-time opportunity, on a permanent basis. The role will be based in 10 South Colonnade, Canary Wharf London, E14 4PU.

Government departments and agencies are working towards implementing a minimum 60% attendance in office sites.

We are currently implementing a flexible, hybrid way of working, with a minimum of 8 days per month working on site to enable the collaboration and contact with partners and stakeholders needed to deliver MHRA business. Attendance on site is driven by business needs so depending on the nature of the role, this can flex up to 12 days a month, with the remainder of time worked either remotely or in the office. Some roles will need to be on site more regularly. Please discuss this with the recruiting manager before accepting an appointment.

Job Description

Who are we?

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency enhance and improve the health of millions of people every day through the effective regulation of medicines and medical devices, underpinned by science and research.

The Digital and Technology Group (DTG) lies at the heart of the Agency and is responsible for delivering an optimised IT infrastructure and maximising the secure use of data to enable our scientists, inspectors, and the rest of the organisation to deliver world-class services which can improve outcomes for patients and the general public. The Group was essential in the race to approve COVID-19 vaccines in 2020 and in supporting the UK to set up its own medicines and devices approvals systems following our exit from the EU. Its centre of excellence is also responsible for delivering a broad portfolio of change initiatives, both to transform the Agency’s legacy technologies and to deliver innovative new solutions, designed around our customers’ needs. The Knowledge and Information Management team within the Digital Enablement function is responsible for data protection as well as setting the MHRA’s standards and frameworks for our management and use of records and information.

What’s the role?

The Data Protection Coordinator will support the Data Protection Lead and the Knowledge and Information Management Team. The postholder will be responsible for a range of duties including managing a caseload of active data protection queries and requests for advice, managing and advising on Individual Rights Requests, and for completing personal data breach reviews and investigations. This role requires work in collaboration with operational colleagues in teams across the MHRA.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Data Protection Lead to support other colleagues across the agency to understand the requirements of and to comply with data protection legislation. Deputise for the Data Protection Lead when necessary.
  • Manage a caseload of active requests for advice and queries, individual information rights requests, including gathering of information, preparing responses, meeting relevant deadlines, reviewing and updating the live casework registers, and running monthly performance reports.
  • Carry out data breach reviews and support with investigations as required.
  • Deliver training and publicity to the agency, promoting confidentiality of personal and sensitive information in line with the MHRA policies and procedures and preparing SAR Coordinators for their role.

  • Delivering at Pace (A, I) - this role requires ensuring timely quality deliverables, working flexibly with colleagues in other groups to ensure data protection compliance.
  • Developing Self and Others (A) - you will need to be able to identify gaps in your skills and knowledge and consistently meet your development objectives. You should seek learning opportunities and listen to developmental feedback from your managers.

Experience Criteria:

  • Minimum one year experience in using Microsoft 365 products (SharePoint, OneDrive, MS Office) (A)

Technical Criteria:

  • Essential – HNC or equivalent in Data Protection (for example, Level 4 Data Protection and Information Governance Qualification) or Practitioner Certificate in Data Protection, good knowledge of UK GDPR (A)
  • Desirable – degree in computer science, information technology or law (A)

Benefits

Alongside your salary of £34,183, Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency contributes £9,902 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. Find out what benefits a Civil Service Pension provides (opens in a new window).

  • Annual Leave: 25 days annual leave on entry, rising by one day for each completed year of service to a maximum of 30 days and pro-rata for part-time staff. PLUS 8 bank holidays
