Lead Data & AI Scientist (BCB)

Location(S): London or Edinburgh Hours: Full-time Working Pattern: Hybrid - 2+ days or 40% of time in Edinburgh End Date: Wednesday 08 July 2026 Salary: Competitive (discussed at interview)

About the Role

Want to lead the next wave of AI innovation in commercial banking? This senior, hands-on leadership role focuses on shaping the Data & AI roadmap, building scalable solutions, and delivering measurable business outcomes. Your work will transform how we develop predictive AI, generative AI, and agentic systems, driving impact in digital experiences, process automation, and data-driven insights.

You’ll play a pivotal role in:

  • Designing groundbreaking AI solutions
  • Enhancing client experiences
  • Automating business processes
  • Aligning data-driven strategies with BCB’s growth goals

Responsibilities

Strategic & Executive Leadership

  • Set the strategic direction for Data & AI across Business & Commercial Banking (BCB), ensuring investment alignment with business outcomes
  • Lead enterprise-level AI solutions (client journeys, automation, insights)
  • Own the Data & AI capability roadmap, prioritising cloud-native, scalable architectures
  • Partner with senior leaders to shape high-value AI use cases and influence strategy

Technical & Delivery Leadership

  • Technical leadership for Data Science & AI team, setting engineering standards
  • Oversee the full lifecycle of AI solutions: development → deployment → monitoring
  • Coach and mentor data scientists and engineers, driving best practices
  • Ensure responsible AI compliance (governance, risk, regulatory)
  • Develop proofs-of-concept (PoCs) to accelerate adoption of new capabilities

  • Conceptualise and deliver technology-based solutions for complex business challenges

Requirements

Key Skills & Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in computer science, data science, AI, mathematics, engineering, or equivalent commercial experience
  • 7+ years’ evangelism and thought leadership role in industrially relevant AI

Technical Expertise

  • AI/ML Domain Knowledge: Hands-on experience in predictive & generative AI, agentic systems, and cloud architectures
  • Scientific Methods: Data/Models/Causal Thinking and Data Science Math with computation (statistics, learning theory, search, optimization, graphics)
  • Leadership: Mentor and shape a data & AI team while maintaining a high ethical standard
  • Technology Stack: Proficiency in Data Engineering, MLOps, and AI governance
  • Big Data: Capability to liaise with the business around data ownership, infrastructure management, and people development
