Data Visualisation Engineer – The Guardian

Join our team at The Guardian and become part of a dynamic, diverse, and inclusive global organisation dedicated to fearless investigative journalism and holding power to account. Our collaborative of award-winning journalists, commercial innovators, and digital experts fosters a culture of excellence, experimentation, and impact, representing a rich variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

We seek a Data Visualisation Engineer to merge technical expertise with storytelling and user-centred design, enriching our data platforms to make insights accessible, engaging, and actionable.

About the Role

You’ll partner with our data teams to refine how journalists and editorial teams engage with Ophan, our bespoke analytics platform, while shaping broader data products that enhance user experience across our digital ecosystem.

This hybrid role blends:

  • Transforming complex datasets into intuitive visual narratives.
  • Designing and embedding interactive dashboards, charts, and reports.
  • Bridging technical requirements with user-centric design principles.
  • Experimenting with innovative visualisation techniques transferable beyond journalism.

Your mission: ensure clarity, accessibility, and impact from data’s presentation—balancing Audience needs, technical feasibility, and business objectives in our fast-moving environment.

Core Responsibilities

  • Translational Storytelling: Convert intricate datasets into clear visual narratives (charts, graphs, infographics) tailored to diverse stakeholders.
  • Design & Development: Create high-impact, interactive dashboards and reports, prioritising usability and aesthetics.
  • Ensure Integrity: Validate data accuracy, consistency, and adherence to quality standards.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Communicate technical/design rationale to non-technical and technical teams using prototyping toolkits (e.g., Tableau, Highcharts).
  • Industry Leadership: Monitor evolving trends in data visualisation, accessibility, UX research, and apply best practices to our workflows.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
