About the Role
As part of the IT Operations team, the Database Administrator is responsible for the administration, support, maintenance, and continuous improvement of business-critical database platforms, working closely with development, infrastructure, security, and operations teams.
The role ensures the availability, performance, security, and resilience of production and non-production database environments while supporting business continuity, system optimisation, and service delivery.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Database Management & Support
- Administer, maintain, and support SQL Server environments (including test/development systems).
- Monitor and optimise database performance, implementing tuning and automation initiatives.
- Uphold high availability and mission-critical performance of database platforms.
Integration & Development
- Collaborate with application development teams on database structures, SQL code, stored procedures, and system integrations.
- Design and implement database solutions—including data migration, configuration, and enhancements.
- Develop and maintain automated data flows between business systems.

Backup, Recovery & Resilience
- Manage backup, recovery, and disaster recovery (DR) processes to ensure compliance with business continuity needs.
- Participate in DR planning, testing, and exercises.
Proactive Support & Troubleshooting
- Monitor production and test environments to prevent service disruptions.
- Troubleshoot complex technical incidents, providing expertise for timely resolutions.
- Ensure database security, access controls, and compliance with policies and best practices.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate technical documentation, procedures, and operational standards.
- Support audits and collaborate with internal/external security and compliance teams.
- Contribute to IT/business initiatives and wider operational duties as required.
Operational Support
- Act as part of an on-call support rota, providing out-of-hours assistance during critical incidents.
- Adhere to health, safety, security, and environmental (HSSE) standards.
Essential Requirements
Qualifications
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline OR equivalent professional experience.
- Microsoft SQL Server certification (preferably MCTS or equivalent).
- Formal database administration (DBA) training.
Experience
- Business-critical IT systems support experience (24/7 operational environment).
- 2+ years administering Microsoft SQL Server.
- Experience with relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, MySQL, PostgreSQL).
- Proficiency in Transact-SQL, stored procedures, and database processes.
- Hands-on experience with backups, recovery, disaster recovery, and continuity solutions.
- Technical incident troubleshooting in operational environments.
- Knowledge of capacity planning, monitoring, and system optimisation.

Desirable Requirements (Not essential but preferred)
- Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., Microsoft Azure, AWS).
- ITIL Foundation certification.
- Support for business intelligence/reporting tools (e.g., IBM Cognos BI).
- On-call / out-of-hours support experience.
- Domain experience in transport, ticketing, or high-availability services.
