The Role: Database Administrator

You are responsible for managing, optimizing, and protecting Deel’s database systems, ensuring data integrity, security, and high availability. This role is critical to supporting Deel’s mission-driven operations and enabling data-driven decisions across the organization.


Responsibilities

  • Support and guide developers on database best practices (design, architecture)
  • Review and approve database-related code for adherence to Deel’s standards
  • Monitor database health, performance, and metrics
  • Resolve live incidents (errors, locks, deadlocks, availability issues)
  • Perform maintenance tasks (backups, restores, engine upgrades, data migrations, configuration changes)
  • Develop custom database functions and triggers
  • Ensure data integrity and quality across systems
  • Optimise performance by identifying inefficiencies in queries/parameters and recommending solutions

Requirements

Essential

  • 3+ years administering production PostgreSQL databases
  • 3+ years administering production Oracle databases
  • Proficiency in SQL queries (including window functions)
  • Expertise in DB programming (triggers, stored procedures, etc.)
  • Experience with data modeling (designing tables, relationships)
  • Ability to troubleshoot performance issues and optimize query execution
  • Capacity to respond to live incidents (24/7 readiness or rapid escalation support)
  • Experience with:
    • Git (version control)
    • Docker & Kubernetes
  • Bonus: Experience with other RDBMS (SQL Server, MySQL, etc.) or NoSQL databases

Nice-to-Have

  • 1+ years of high-level programming experience (Python, JavaScript, etc.)
  • 1+ years managing cloud databases (AWS, GCP, Azure)
