Job Title: Database Administrator (DBA)
2 month initial contract // FULLY REMOTE UK Based // must have ACTIVE SC Clearance
Job Description
This role is ideal for an experienced PostgreSQL and Oracle Database Administrator with strong data modelling expertise. You will manage and optimise database environments across both cloud and on-premises infrastructure, working closely with software engineers, data pipeline engineers, and data scientists to design and maintain robust data models that underpin business-critical applications. You will own core application data structures, safeguard database performance, security, and reliability, and lead the ongoing evolution of the data platform throughout its lifecycle.
Responsibilities
- Own and administer PostgreSQL and Oracle database clusters across multiple environments, including cloud-based and on-premises deployments.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimise database performance to ensure high availability, scalability, and reliability.
- Design, maintain, and evolve logical and physical data models to support application and data integration requirements.
- Manage database schema changes and migrations across development, testing, production, and offline environments.
- Define and govern the lifecycle of application data, ensuring data quality, consistency, and compliance with internal standards.
- Collaborate with data engineers and data scientists to onboard and integrate diverse internal and external data sources.
- Implement and manage database security controls, including user roles, permissions, authentication mechanisms, and Row-Level Security (RLS).
- Work closely with infrastructure and platform teams to configure PostgreSQL installations, perform upgrades, and coordinate patch management activities.
- Develop and maintain backup, recovery, disaster recovery, and business continuity procedures.
- Establish database standards, best practices, and operational procedures to support scalable application development.
- Participate in capacity planning and provide recommendations for improvements to database architecture.
- Support troubleshooting of application and database-related issues across all environments.

Essential Skills
- Proven experience as a Database Administrator (DBA) working with PostgreSQL and Oracle databases.
- Strong proficiency in SQL for querying, optimisation, and troubleshooting.
- Demonstrated expertise in logical and physical data modelling to support complex applications and integrations.
- Hands-on experience administering databases in both cloud and on-premises environments.
- Solid understanding of database performance tuning, high availability, scalability, and reliability.
- Practical experience managing database schema changes and migrations across multiple environments.
- Strong knowledge of database security concepts, including user roles, permissions, authentication, and Row-Level Security (RLS).
- Ability to collaborate effectively with software engineers, data engineers, and data scientists.
- Experience developing and maintaining backup, recovery, disaster recovery, and business continuity procedures.
- SC Clearance
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience defining and governing the lifecycle of application data, including data quality and consistency.
- Background in onboarding and integrating diverse internal and external data sources.
- Experience working closely with infrastructure and platform teams on configuration, upgrades, and patch management.
- Knowledge of establishing database standards, best practices, and operational procedures.
- Experience contributing to capacity planning and database architecture improvements.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to resolve complex application and database-related issues.
