About The Role
We are seeking a skilled Database Engineer to join our client's IT team in Wigan. This role offers a unique opportunity to work on critical database platforms supporting essential business operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining, optimizing, and securing SQL environments, supporting Windows Server infrastructure, and driving continuous improvements across the technology estate. This position is ideal for a proactive professional who enjoys troubleshooting, performance tuning, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver resilient and secure database solutions. The role involves a hybrid working model, requiring two days on-site per week, providing a balance between collaborative office work and flexible remote work.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess strong experience in database administration, particularly with Microsoft SQL Server. Proven expertise supporting Azure SQL and Windows Server environments is essential. Candidates should have a solid understanding of backup, recovery, and disaster recovery processes, along with experience in infrastructure monitoring, patch management, and vulnerability remediation. Knowledge of security best practices and system hardening techniques is required. Additional skills such as PowerShell scripting or experience with other database systems like PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle, as well as familiarity with monitoring platforms or cyber security frameworks, would be advantageous but are not mandatory. Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and communication skills are crucial for success in this role.

Responsibilities
- Administer, maintain, and optimize Microsoft SQL Server and Azure SQL environments to ensure high availability, performance, and security.
- Manage database backups, restores, disaster recovery testing, and maintenance plans to safeguard data integrity and availability.
- Monitor database performance, availability, and storage, identifying opportunities for optimization and implementing necessary improvements.
- Support Windows Server administration tasks, including patching, updates, and routine maintenance to ensure system stability.
- Maintain the stability and performance of both production and non-production environments, ensuring minimal downtime.
- Respond promptly to infrastructure monitoring alerts, investigate incidents, and perform root cause analysis to prevent recurrence.
- Contribute to cybersecurity efforts by implementing secure configurations, ensuring patch compliance, and managing access controls.
- Produce and maintain detailed technical documentation and operational procedures to support ongoing system management.
- Collaborate closely with infrastructure, software engineering, and IT teams to deliver platform enhancements and improvements.
- Participate in an out-of-hours support rota to handle critical incidents and ensure continuous service availability when required.
