Day Controller

Closing Date: 14/07/2026 Location: Durrington, Worthing Contract Type: 1x Permanent, 1x 12 months fixed term contract Hours: 38 per week Salary: From £29,800 (dependent on skills and experience)


About The Role

We are recruiting for two controller vacancies (1x Permanent, 1x 12 months fixed term contract) within our Waste Water Operational Control Centre. This critical role involves monitoring and controlling Sewage Treatment Works and Sewage Pumping Stations, ensuring:

  • Meticulous analysis of alarm data
  • Prompt mobilisation of resources when assets underperform
  • Continuous oversight of system efficiency and reliability

As Day Controller, you will provide round-the-clock monitoring and control, ensuring optimal operation of our sewage infrastructure.


Key Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Analyse data from control systems to coordinate rapid responses to alarms and alerts, collaborating closely with schedulers.
  • Deliver accurate, timely, and concise information to Southern Water, contractors, service providers, and stakeholders, complying with statutory requirements.
  • Responsible for critical facets of alarm management, ensuring immediate action to prevent disruptions and maintain efficiency.
  • Coordinate resources across teams to resolve operational challenges with efficiency.
  • Ensures transparent communication with all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintains strict adherence to health, safety, and welfare protocols, prioritising public and employee well-being.

Technical & Compliance Requirements

  • Engage in training programmes (e.g., ‘License to Control’ development) and fully comply with all system requirements.
  • Stay updated on latest operational protocols and process improvements.
  • Integrate Southern Water’s systems (e.g., alarm data, asset conditions, weather inputs) to inform proactive decision-making.
  • Adhere to security and operational policies, including pre-employment checks.

Shift Pattern

  • Base hours: Monday–Friday, 07:00–15:00 (flexibility may apply).
  • Occasional late shifts (e.g., 11:00–19:00) to cover holidays or sickness absences.

Who You Are & What You’ll Bring

Essential Qualifications

  • Educational attainment of GCSE standard (or equivalent).

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Experience operating alarm management and IT systems (Company Office Cloud, Sensus, etc.).
  • Prior experience working at Southern Water or similar waste/water operations.
  • A proactive, organised approach with strong technical aptitude.
