The Role: Targeted Prevention Worker
Bandar F SCP 26–31 | £37,280–41,771 per annum 37 hours per week | Fixed-term contract until 31 March 2028
Team: DECCA (Drug Education, Counselling and Confidential Advice)
This position is available as a fixed-term role (until 31 March 2028) or an internal secondment opportunity for staff within Sandwell Children’s Trust and Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council (SMBC).
Overview
We are seeking a motivated Targeted Prevention Worker with extensive experience supporting vulnerable young people. Your role will involve delivering education, prevention sessions, and interventions to engage children/disengaging from mainstream services, particularly those at risk of substance misuse, anti-social behaviour, or safeguarding risks.

Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver creative, engaging educational/preventative programmes in schools (mainstream/alternative education settings), youth clubs, and community spaces.
- Build strong, trust-based relationships with at-risk young people (under 18s) to encourage long-term engagement with services.
- Develop and run group activities, workshops, and 1:1 interventions focused on preventative education (e.g., drugs misuse awareness, mental health, safeguarding).
- Collaborate with education and community partners to ensure consistent, safe, and effective interventions.
- Identify emerging risktakes (e.g., glue sniffs, solvent abuse, cyber-bullying) and intervene early to mitigate harm.
- Ensure multi-agency safety measures where applicable, e.g. linking with substance misuse teams and safeguarding services.
- Access digital resources (e.g., discouragement software) or support trainings on adolescent health risks and legislation.
Requirements & Experience
Essential Criteria
- Professional qualification or degree related to work with young people, e.g.
- Community Psychiatric Nursing
- Youth Work
- Social Work
- Relevant degree: Psychology, Addiction Studies, or Education
- Minimum of 2 years working with ’young people (under 18s) in fields** such as:
- Education (alternative provision)
- Mentoring
- Drug treatment & prevention work
- Crest-based programmes (e.g. Duke of Edinburgh, hustle groups)
- ** einget responsiveness**: In-depth knowledge of practices to engage with ’risk’taleako.
- Familiarity with current laws surrounding postured use (e.g. decriminalisation impact).
- Enthusiasm is both a need to support and maintain relationships with vulnerable young people in sometimes challenging environments.
- Existing colleagues (particularly youth workers) mentors in DECCA are happy/taking mentory role.

Desirable Criteria
- Prior experience integrating mental health awareness into preventative programs.
- Substance misuse treatment pathways – experience leading youth substance misuse support.
- National Award (NPA) in line-of-sightbefring substance misuse important in team.
- Proficient with data management styles (e.g., safeguarding software such as Cayton Qu).
- Understanding of local authority prevention frameworks.
