Job Summary

This is a live-in position (37 hours/week) within the Scottish boarding residential team. The Matron will act as a parental figure, overseeing domestic, pastoral, and medical needs while ensuring a positive boarding experience.

The role supports the journeys of Defence families, aligning with national strategic goals.


Duties & Responsibilities

General Roles

  • Act as a figure of reassurance and stability to pupils.
  • Manage domestic operations, particularly housekeeping, laundry, clothing management, and hygiene standards.
  • Supervise staff (Housekeeper) and appoint auxiliaries.
  • Foster a secure, well-ordered environment for pupils, staff, and visitors.
  • Support the House staff rota during evenings/weekends as part of Pastoral Boarding Duties.

Student Support

  • Pastoral Care: Implement firm yet compassionate discipline; consult the Housemaster/mistress (HoM) on discretions.
  • Health Liaison: Monitor pupil wellbeing; coordinate with School Nurse and Health/Wellbeing support.
  • Supplies Needs: Assist the Housekeeper in providing essential supplies for student use.
  • Personal Hygiene: Instruct and monitor students in maintaining cleanliness.
  • Special Occasions: Organise or assist with events (e.g. birthdays, cultural celebrations).

Person Specification

Essential

  • SSSC Registration: Valid or commitment to register as a Scottish Social Services Council adult worker and passing SVQ3 (SCQF Level 7) within SSSC timelines.
  • Living Arrangements: Ability to reside in 1-bedroom flat within boarding premises.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Equips to build rapport with students.
  • Organisation: Exceptional organisation to handle complex schedules.
  • Adaptability: High tolerance and patience to guide young people.
  • Teamwork: Experienced working collaboratively.

Desirable

  • UK Driving Licence (full, clean record).
  • Pastoral Care Certification as a supplementary skill.
  • Experience with teenagers/young adults.
  • Prior exposure to boarding environments.
  • Safeguarding knowledge and training.
