As a Deli Assistant, you will be responsible for delivering exceptional customer service while assisting with food preparation, product display, and maintaining a clean and hygienic deli department. You will play a vital role in enhancing our customers' experience in our shop and ensuring they enjoy high-quality deli products.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service
- Greet and serve customers with a friendly and attentive manner.
- Assist customers in choosing deli items and provide information about products and services, including ingredients, allergens, and cooking and storage instructions.
- Handle customer inquiries, orders, and special requests effectively and efficiently.
- You will be familiar with the Allergen folder and know where to find any information requested by the customer.
- Ensure the customer always comes first.
Food Preparation
- Prepare deli products, cutting cheese, slicing cold cuts, packaging, and labeling food for retail.
- Maintain food quality and freshness standards, ensuring all food products are labeled accurately.
- You will complete the necessary training courses to ensure compliance with food safety standards and regulations are maintained.
Daily Compliance Records
- You will be responsible for carrying out the relevant checks on a daily basis in a timely manner. Temperature checks, goods inwards, and cleaning lists should be completed in the time frames stated and are monitored digitally.

Product Display
- Arrange deli products attractively in the fridges and ensure stock rotation is carried out to maintain freshness.
- Monitor stock levels and restock when necessary.
- Ensure product dates are correctly recorded in the correct date diaries and products are removed when they reach expiry date.
Deli Merchandising
- Collaborate with Deli Manager and Farm Shop managers on product merchandising and promotions.
- Refresh displays regularly and adapt for seasonal changes.
- Keep displays clean and fully stocked.
Cleanliness and Hygiene
- Maintain a clean and sanitized deli area, including workstations, displays, and equipment.
- Follow food safety and hygiene procedures at all times to ensure food safety standards are met.
- You will be responsible for ensuring your own personal hygiene standards are met. You will be smartly presented, hair tied back if necessary, hands washed regularly, and no loose jewelry, false nails, or lashes that pose a risk to the food.
Stock Management
- Assist in monitoring stock levels and inventory.
- Notify the management team of low stock or fast-selling items.
- Participate in regular stock counts and keep the stock rooms, fridges, and freezers in a clean and organized state.
- You will help when deliveries arrive, carry out the necessary temperature and quality checks, and check off and store the products correctly.

Food Waste Reduction
- Minimize food waste by managing rotation of products, making use of promotions to move slow sellers, and repurposing surplus items in creative ways.
Product Knowledge
- Stay informed about all deli products, including origin, taste, and preparation methods.
- Share this knowledge with customers and colleagues to enhance the overall experience.
- Share ideas of recipes, new product suggestions, or display methods. Innovation and creativity are encouraged.
Team Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with the deli team and other store departments to ensure smooth operations and excellent customer service.
- Familiarize yourself with other departments' layouts and stock to help customers more effectively.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues and managers.
Additional Duties
- Must be flexible to work weekends and across various sites within Cheshire
