Democratic Services Officer
Location Stratford-upon-Avon Town Council
Salary £29,064 to £31,022 per annum (on the Stratford-upon-Avon Town Council (SCTP 13:17) pay scale)
Contract Permanent, 37 hours per week
- Some occasional weekends and evening meetings (with overtime paid)
- The role can be filled on a full-time or part-time basis
- For part-time applicants, working hours will be approximately 15–22 hours per week
- Applicants can indicate their preferred hours and days of work, subject to operational requirements
About the Role
This position, in partnership with CHRG&S, aims to recruit a Democratic Services Officer to support Stratford-upon-Avon Town Council in delivering its democratic, civic, and governance functions. The role involves:
- Professional and transparent delivery of meetings, decisions, and civic activities in compliance with statutory requirements
- Committee administration, governance support, and civic protocol
- Mayoral support, with full responsibility transferring from other duties in 2027
- Contribution to major civic events
- Supporting councillors, residents, and partners across Stratford-upon-Avon

Responsibilities
Key duties include:
- Managing agendas, minutes, and governance records with meticulous organisation and detail-focussed attention
- Acting as a clear, confident communicator with strong written skills to handle procedural advice and formal meetings
- Upholding professionalism and diplomacy in civic/public-facing settings
- Balancing competing priorities in a flexible and pressure-resilient manner
- Developing familiarity with civic protocol and ceremonial practice
- Maintaining expertise with digital tools for online governance updates
- Playing an active role in preserving Stratford-upon-Avon’s civic traditions and major events through event preparation and coordination
Requirements
Ideal candidates should be:
- Organised, detail-oriented, and comfortable working with governance documentation
- Strong verbal and written communicators with professional presentation skills
- Adaptable and solution-focused when managing formal meetings and residential consultations
- Comfortable working in public-facing environments, demonstrating diplomacy and tact
- Capable of maintaining composure under pressure while managing multiple priorities
- Intrigued by civic protocol and open to learning ceremonial traditions
- Skilled with digital administrative tools, including updating governance information online
