Summary
Newsgathering and Planning sits at the heart of Volant Media's journalism, connecting correspondents, contributors, planning and output teams to deliver distinctive, high-quality content across linear and digital platforms.
Reporting to the Deployment Operations Lead, the Deployment Coordinator is responsible for supporting the planning, coordination and delivery of deployments across the UK and internationally.
Working closely with Correspondents, Editors, Planning teams, Security and external suppliers, the Deployment Coordinator helps ensure that crews, contributors and resources are deployed safely, efficiently and in support of editorial priorities.
This is a fast-paced role requiring excellent organisational skills, sound editorial judgement and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic news environment. In addition to coordinating deployments, the role contributes to planning discussions and supports the development of editorial coverage plans.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate correspondent, crew and contributor deployments for planned and breaking news coverage.
- Arrange travel, accommodation, visas, equipment and other operational requirements in support of deployments.
- Work closely with the Deployment Operations Lead to ensure deployments are planned, resourced and delivered effectively.
- Liaise with Security, the Editorial Support Unit and other departments to ensure appropriate duty-of-care measures are in place.
- Maintain accurate deployment records, schedules and associated cost information.
- Support the management of deployment budgets and ensure resources are used efficiently and responsibly.
- Monitor developing stories and provide operational and editorial input to support deployment decisions and changing coverage priorities.
- Communicate clearly with correspondents, producers, editors and operational teams to ensure deployment plans are understood and executed effectively.
- Assist in maintaining forward planning information and deployment readiness across the department.
- Contribute to editorial planning discussions and support the development of coverage plans.
- Prepare planning notes, briefings and other material to support coverage where required.
- Support the safe and effective operation of field teams by ensuring appropriate procedures and planning measures are followed.
- Ensure all activities are carried out in accordance with Volant Media's editorial guidelines, policies, procedures and compliance requirements.
- Support the delivery of high standards of professionalism, safety and operational effectiveness.
- Champion innovation and modern ways of working, including the appropriate use of AI and emerging technologies in accordance with Volant Media policies and standards.
- Other duties as reasonably required.

Requirements
- Experience in a broadcast newsroom, planning, newsgathering or operational coordination role.
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Experience coordinating travel, logistics or operational activity in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder-management skills.
- The ability to remain calm, organised and effective under pressure.
- Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to overcoming operational challenges.
- Understanding of deployment planning, resource management and operational coordination.
- Awareness of duty-of-care responsibilities and the operational requirements of field deployments.
- An understanding of news production, editorial planning and the requirements of broadcast journalism.
- Awareness of media law, editorial compliance and broadcast journalism standards.
- Financial awareness, with the ability to monitor costs and support the efficient use of resources.
- The ability to build productive relationships across Newsgathering, Planning, Security, the Editorial Support Unit and other support functions.
- Fluent spoken and written English. Fluency in Farsi or Dari would be advantageous.
- Confidence using newsroom, planning and operational systems.
- A willingness to embrace innovation and modern ways of working, including the appropriate use of AI and emerging technologies in accordance with Volant Media policies and standards.
