Depot Operator
Depot Operator – Oil Fuel Depot (COMAH Site) – Thanckes, Torpoint, Cornwall
Salary: £31,175 per annum (rising to £32,975 after full training), plus paid overtime and benefits.
Location: Thanckes, Torpoint, Cornwall
About the Role
We are seeking an additional Depot Operator to join our team at our Oil Fuel Depot (OFD)—a Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) regulated site in Thanckes, Torpoint, Cornwall.
As part of a collaborative team, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient receipt, storage, and supply of middle distillate fuels for the HM Navy and OPA customers. Daily operations include maintaining OFD facilities while upholding strict health and safety, compliance, and emergency response protocols.
Given the nature of the site, this role necessitates a strong work ethic, the ability to stay calm under pressure, and an unwavering commitment to protecting both people and the environment.
Occasional travel to other sites may be required—a full (preferably clean) driving licence is essential.
Key Responsibilities

Fuel Logistics & Storage
- Monitor and ensure the safe receipt and distribution of fuel from vessels, pipelines, tanks, and road tankers.
- Operate tank farm, jetty, and road tanker loading equipment in adherence to company policies, industry best practice, and relevant regulations.

Quality & Compliance
- Conduct fuel sampling, testing, and volume measurements in line with the OPA Fuel Quality Manual and HMRC bonded warehouse obligations.
- Perform basic equipment checks on pumps, valves, and petroleum-handling systems.

Vessel & Site Operations
- Assist with berthing, slipping, and fuelling of ships.
- Conduct slinging duties, deploy/recover pneumatic fenders, and contribute to general site maintenance.

Emergency Preparedness
- Understand and execute emergency procedures as defined.
- Operate oil-water separators in case of spills or leaks.

Administrative & Support Tasks
- Complete required documentation and paperwork.
- Support engineering staff where needed.
- Operate forklift trucks (requires valid licence and training).
The Candidate: Key Requirements
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Driving Licence: A full, clean driving licence is mandatory.
- Health & Safety Awareness: A strong understanding of workplace health and safety, a clean work record, and medical fitness for specialised training (e.g., Breathing Apparatus & Confined Space).
- Training Compliance: Willingness to undergo accredited Bulk Liquid Operations training, including on-site and residential courses.
- Computer Literacy: Above-average proficiency with computers and office software to support role demands.
- Team Player Ethos: Ability to operate as part of a rostered on-call team, including working overtime at short notice.
Desired Attributes
- Experience in hazardous materials handling or COMAH-regulated environments would be advantageous but is not mandatory given full training support.
- Certification/Potential Growth: Open to training to become a Qualified AP (Authorised Person) to issue permits and ensure construction/installation compliance with OPA’s Control of Works obligations.
