About the Role

Working in the heart of the newsroom, you’ll help shape how the Guardian’s journalism is optimised to engage new and diverse audiences.

The role operates on a 12-month fixed-term contract or staff secondment, with a 9-day fortnight working pattern, including regular weekend, early, and late shifts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Guide editorial teams on presentation and digital best practice, optimising article presentation (including headlines, images etc.) to maximise engaged reach
  • Train other Guardian colleagues on effective digital optimisation
  • Monitor day-to-day trends across internet platforms, identifying editorial opportunities that align with guardian.com’s remit and passing them to relevant editors
  • Stay up-to-date with search, social, and aggregator platform developments to spot future opportunities or issues
  • Support the identification of emerging platforms and development of editorial and business strategies
  • Monitor and analyse performance in major search engines (Google, Google Discover, Google News), and other key referrers
  • Track search and referral traffic throughout the day using analytics software
  • Report on performance, best practice, and competitive insights to editorial staff via morning news meetings, emails, and informal briefings
  • Help define and continually update best practice for digital optimisation, referencing both Industry trends and Guardian strategy

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
