We are now looking for a deputy audience editor to join our editorial team!

About the Role

The deputy audience editor will focus on expanding the reach of the Guardian’s journalism to the widest and most relevant audiences. You’ll assist the head of audience development in:

  • Maximising the reach, engagement, and impact of the Guardian’s journalism
  • Supporting the development of strategies to engage audiences on the Guardian’s platform and external platforms
  • Working in the heart of the newsroom to help shape the Guardian’s journalism, ensuring it reaches and engages new and diverse audiences

This is a 12-month fixed-term contract or staff secondment, with a 9-day fortnight working pattern, including regular rotated weekend, early, and late shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the Guardian’s journalism reaches the broadest, most relevant audience
  • Guide editorial teams on presentation and digital best practice, optimising:
    • Article presentation (e.g. headlines, main images)
    • Engagement and reach
  • Train other Guardian colleagues in effective digital optimisation
  • Monitor day-to-day trends across the internet, identifying editorial opportunities that fit theguardian.com’s remit and pass them on to relevant editors
  • Stay up-to-date on all new search, social, and aggregator platform developments to identify future opportunities or issues
  • Support the identification of emerging platforms and development of editorial/business strategies
  • Monitor and analyse performance in major search engines, Google Discover, Google News, and other major referrers
  • Use analytics software to track search and referral traffic throughout the day
  • Monitor analytics and report on performance, best practice, and competitive set to editorial staff:
    • Informally during morning news meetings
    • Via email
    • Other channels
  • Help define and continually update best practice for digital optimisation with reference to Guardian strategy and broader industry considerations

Requirements

  • Excellent knowledge of digital news publishing, SEO, social media, platform landscape, and the web
  • Experience of news production and content management systems
  • Extensive experience using web analytics tools to analyse performance
  • Preference for professionals with an interest in diverse communities and experience identifying, engaging, and growing underrepresented audiences
  • Strong subbing experience is an advantage
  • Experience working in busy newsrooms and presenting to senior editors
  • Knowledge of the Guardian’s editorial standards and values, ensuring alignment with them
  • Ability to bring a diverse perspective to the role
  • Familiarity with the Guardian’s work culture and values
