Now we’re seeking a senior leader to join the Corporate Management Team, tasked with expanding our strategic leadership capacity.
As Chief Executive Depute and Section 95 Officer, you’ll provide executive support for the Chief Executive, whilst shaping the Council’s voice at a local and national level to champion Shetland’s best interests. This pivotal post will also oversee a diverse portfolio of corporate services, including:
- Finance
- Human Resources
- Transformation, Climate Change & Waste
- Asset and Property Management Services
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Accountability
- Represent Shetland Islands Council visibly and professionally at local, regional, and national forums.
- Model and uphold the Council’s organisational values with a commitment to a "One Council" approach.
- Provide deputised support to the Chief Executive as required.

Service Portfolios
- Drive performance and accountability across five critical corporate services.
- Foster deliverable outcomes within asset, financial, and HR frameworks, while driving sustainability through climate and waste initiatives.
- Champion the professional development of teams, recognising it as a cornerstone of organisational success.
Engagement & Advocacy
- Build and nurture strong relationships with elected members, partner organisations, and stakeholders.
- Apply your communication and diplomatic skills to amplify Shetland’s goals, ensuring our community’s voice is heard.
Essential Requirements
- Qualified chartered accountant (or equivalent professional status).
- Strong leadership and management track record, with the ability to inspire, motivate, and catalyse team performance.
- Clear passion for values-led governance and a visible, accountable leadership presence.
- Proven ability to deputise effectively at senior executive levels.
- Expertise in broader corporate strategy relevant to public or third-sector organisations.
