Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO) – Safety and Clinical Governance

About the Role

Barts Health NHS Trust is seeking an exceptional clinical leader to assume the role of Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO) – Safety and Clinical Governance, a significant senior leadership opportunity to shape and guide the Trust’s approach to patient safety, clinical governance, and assurance across the Group.

This position sits at the heart of the Chief Medical Officer’s portfolio, offering strategic oversight and executive leadership over a broad and complex set of safety-critical, regulatory, and governance functions. The post holder will play a pivotal role in ensuring high-risk clinical practices are effectively governed, providing strong assurance to the Board and aligning with national standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate key safety and clinical governance workstreams, ensuring:
    • Robust oversight
    • Consistency of standards
    • Clear escalation of risks
  • Oversee senior leadership across:
    • Statutory and specialist governance areas
    • Quality and safety programmes
    • Development of a coherent, Trust-wide patient safety strategy
  • Provide senior medical leadership with executive oversight for:
    • Designated safety-critical and statutory governance functions
    • Accountability for managing patient safety across all Trust sites and services
  • Develop and implement a coherent, Trust-wide approach where:
    • Risks are identified early and managed proactively
    • Risks are escalated appropriately, ensuring clarity from ward to Board
