National Grid Interconnectors – Control Centre (IFA1, Sellindge)
About the Role
National Grid Interconnectors plays a crucial role in the UK’s net zero energy transition by operating HVDC interconnectors that link the UK’s energy system with close neighbours—allowing energy import/export. The team also develops new projects to meet future greener energy demands.
We are recruiting for a Deputy Control Manager based at the Control Centre on site at IFA1 in Sellindge. This role—to directo the Control Centre Manager—entails leading a team of HVDC Control Room Operators responsible for monitoring and controlling the IFA1 and IFA2 HVDC Interconnectors, which connect Great Britain to France.
You will:
- Ensure safe operation of systems, develop a resilient team, and maintain compliance with procedures.
- Collaborate with stakeholders including RTE and the Electricity System Operator.
- Participate in a 24/7 shift rotation, including on-call standby and backup for the Control Centre Manager.
This position is based primarily at Ashford’s Control Room at IFA1, and requires lamp frequent visits to the IFA2 site and potential international travel. You must hold a full UK driving licence (due to the role’s car provision) and be within one hour’s distance of Sellindge, Ashford.

Responsibilities

Team Management:
- Line-manage a team of shift operators, prioritising safe operations.
- Set objectives, plan development, and deliver training (including Control Person Authorisation).
- Conduct refresher assessments and career progression planning, including recruitment strategy to ensure team resilience.

Operational Safeguarding & Compliance:
- Develop and maintain operating procedures aligned with policies and safety rules.
- Collaborate with Electricity System Operators (e.g., RTE) and internal stakeholders.

Systems & Project Coordination:
- Work cross-functionally with suppliers and systems teams to enhance operations and commercial systems.
- Oversee project delivery in the Control Room, ensuring operational efficiency.

Safety & Incident Response:
- Promptly investigate safety concerns, system failures, and operational issues.
- Coordinate with control teams, maintenance contractors, and site staff to manage incidents.
Requirements
- Experience in:
- Control Room environments or an engineering background with knowledge of complex systems (SCADA, high voltage AC/DC, dispatch systems).
- HV electrical environments, understanding system failures and both electrical and mechanical dynamics.
- Making critical, high-pressure decisions under conflicting pressures.

- Competitive salary: £54,090–£63,940 per year (plus standby allowance), plus:
