Location: In-person position based in Billings, Montana with flexible working arrangements
About the Organization
Northern Plains is a grassroots organization of people from the plains, mountains, cities, and towns. We embody the spirit of everyday Montanans passionate about protecting and nurturing the places we calls home.

You’ll work under the direct supervision of the Director of Organizing.
Responsibilities
Key Leadership & Strategy
- Help design and execute a statewide grassroots organizing strategy, emphasizing power-building and member-led leadership
- Partner with organizing leadership to ensure everyday organizing aligns with long-term strategy
- Serve as a senior organizing lead for local/statewide campaigns, developing member leaders as you advance work
Team & Member Development
- Supervise, coach, and mentor 3+ community organizers, fostering growth in effectiveness and capacity
- Train members to step into leadership roles and take ownership of actions

Stakeholder & Relationship Building
- Build and maintain strong ties with members, leaders, and community stakeholders across Montana
- Conduct one-on-one discussions to empower grassroots voices
Campaign & Policy Prioritization
- Apply power analysis and strategic thinking to guide organizing and campaign direction
- Ensure work adheres to organization policies while tracking accountability and legal compliance
Team Culture & Accountability
- Cultivate a collaborative, trust-based, and mission-driven team culture
Requirements & Qualifications
Must-have experience/expertise:
- Proven track record as a grassroots organizer, specializing in base-building, leadership development, or campaign execution
- Advanced skills in people management—coaching, supporting, and holding teams and individuals accountable
- Strong ability to connect big-picture strategy with daily organizing tasks
- Outstanding communication skills to build trust across diverse stakeholder groups
- Organized workflow management, balancing multitasking, independence, and critical judgment
Ideal candidate traits:
- Familiarity with grassroots insurgency as a motivator for political or environmental change
- Open to mentoring and collaborating with organizers from varied backgrounds
- Innovation in creative problem-solving for community-driven impacts

Salary & Benefits
Compensation
- Salary Range: $60,000–$65,000, based on profitally experience and alignment with Northern Plains’ transparent pay structure philosophy
Benefits
Included in your package:
- Health Insurance Options: Fully and partially employer-paid plans
- Paid Time Off: 20 days vacation, 13 paid holidays (including Christmas Eve–New Year’s period), 12 days sick/personal leave
