Deputy Head Impact and Evaluation

University of the Arts London (UAL) – Higher Education Evaluation Specialist


Role Overview

£52,977 – £63,815 per annum | Permanent | Full-time (35 hours/week) | Hybrid (UAL High Holborn/Home)

Join us for an exhilarating opportunity to shape University of the Arts London’s (UAL’s) approach to educational policy evaluation, driving equity, student success, and policy impact.

As a Higher Education Evaluation Specialist, you’ll work closely with the Head of Educational Policy and Inclusion to design and oversee a university-wide evaluation framework. This includes:

  • Developing and implementing an Access and Participation Plan (APP) evaluation strategy, aligning with institutional and national priorities
  • Leading the monitoring, evaluation, and reporting cycle for core educational policies
  • Supporting UAL’s Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2028 preparations
  • Informing on-going development of UAL’s Education Strategy

You’ll collaborate across UAL to enhance data-driven decision-making, strengthen intervention-level evaluation plans, and ensure a robust, centralised approach to evaluating policy impact.


Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate core policies:

    • Safeguard equity, experience, and outcomes for students via policy evaluation cycles
    • Align evaluation processes with UAL’s Education Strategy and APP targets

    • Provide expert insights on evaluation trends, methodologies, and reporting
    • Advise on policy amendments and expansions

  • Strengthen progressive evaluation practice:

    • Oversee implementation of experimental and quasi-experimental research designs in education policy contexts (e.g., randomised controlled trials and difference-in-differences)
    • Develop intervention-level evaluation plans while leveraging UAL’s internal and external datasets
    • Lead the publication and dissemination of APP evaluation findings
  • Collaborate across the institution:

    • Partner with UCPU to enhance data tracking for APP metrics
    • Engage closely with colleagues to optimise disability, gender, BAME, and TFA audiences’ learning outcomes
    • Foster connections with external stakeholders, evaluators, and institutions
  • Advance transparent, inclusive data communication:

    • Translate complex quantitative/qualitative analyses into accessible insights for diverse audiences (e.g., staff, students, stakeholders)
    • Present actionable findings for policy development and review

Requirements

  • Academic background / professional experience:

    • Degree or postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline (e.g. Education, Sociology, Statistics, Economics)
    • Equivalent experience in higher education evaluationAlternatively, a strong vocational background with relevant analytics or policy evaluation skills
  • Technical skills:

    • Proficient in stata, IBM SPSS, and/or Power BI
    • Proficiency in experimental and quasi-experimental research methodologies:
      • Randomised controlled trials (RCTs)
      • Difference-in-differences (DiD)
      • Propensity score matching
      • Regression discontinuity analysis
    • Dedicated to applying these methodologies specifically for educational policy and student success initiatives

    • Demonstrated ability to navigate diverse stakeholders effectively
    • Experience working as lead evaluator for multi-faceted policy projects
    • Deep grasp of structural barriers to equity in higher education faced by underrepresented populations
  • Communication & influence:

    • Proficient in complex insight dissemination, adapting for senior leadership, managers, and students
    • Strong presentational skills, particularly for policy discussions
  • Professional engagement:

    • Commitment to upskilling through conferences, networks, and partnerships
    • Actively contributes to growing the institutional discourse around evaluation standards
